Campbellsville, KY – The #9 Patriots (40-7, 15-2 MSC) hit the road and took both games of Thursday's doubleheader over Campbellsville (25-20, 6-11) at HIG Baseball Field, earning a 10-3 win in the opener followed by a dominant 14-1 victory in game two to clinch the series.
No. 9 Cumberlands Scores Five in First, Takes 10-3 Opener
The Patriots used a five-run first inning and solid pitching to take control early in a 10-3 victory in game one.
Wesley Culley earned the win, improving to 7-1 after tossing six innings while allowing three runs on four hits and striking out seven.
Brayden Stewart closed out the final inning in relief.
Cumberlands struck quickly in the first inning as
Johnboy Rittenhouse launched a three-run home run. Later in the frame,
Clay Shelton added a two-RBI double to give UC a 5-0 lead.
Campbellsville responded with two runs in the second and another in the fifth to cut the deficit to 5-3, but the Patriots continued to add insurance.
Pedro Vasquez delivered an RBI single in the fifth before UC added another run in the sixth on an RBI from
Ronald Almanzar to extend the lead to 7-3.
The Patriots broke the game open in the seventh inning, scoring three runs on sacrifice plays and timely hitting to secure the 10-3 victory.
Rittenhouse led the offense with three RBI, while Vasquez and Shelton each added multiple RBI in the win.
No. 9 Cumberlands Erupts Late in 14-1 Win to Complete Doubleheader Sweep
The Patriots completed the sweep with a dominant 14-1 victory in the nightcap, using a late offensive surge to pull away.
Nolan Wilson earned the win, improving to 7-1 after allowing one run over four innings while striking out five.
Ethan Coronel added three scoreless innings in relief.
After three scoreless innings, Cumberlands broke through in the fourth. Rittenhouse drove in a run with a groundout before
Caden Petrey followed with an RBI on an error to give UC a 2-0 lead.
Campbellsville answered with a solo home run in the bottom half of the inning, but the Patriots responded immediately.
UC plated four runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Rittenhouse to extend the lead to 6-1.
Cumberlands continued to build the advantage in the sixth as
Dariel Castillo delivered an RBI single before
Ronald Almanzar launched a two-run home run to make it 9-1.
The Patriots put the game away in the seventh, scoring five runs on three hits and taking advantage of defensive miscues to push the lead to 14-1.
Rittenhouse led the offense with five RBI, while Almanzar added three RBI and
Justin Veloz collected three hits in the win.
With the victories, UC clinches at least a share of the Mid-South Conference regular season title and will look to secure it outright tomorrow afternoon as the teams meet again for the series finale with first pitch at 12:30 p.m. ET.
