McKenzie, TN – The #8 Patriots (27-6) erased a 5-0 deficit with 14 unanswered runs to defeat Bethel in the series opener on Thursday evening at the Kahlden Complex.
Cumberlands scored 14 runs on nine hits while striking out 15 Bethel batters in the comeback victory.
Mason Howard earned the win in relief after tossing four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while striking out eight to shut down the Wildcats' offense. Wesley Culley got the start, allowing five runs over five innings before the bullpen took control.
At the plate, Caden Petrey led the way with three RBI, while Derick Andiarena, Dariel Castillo, and Johnboy Rittenhouse each drove in multiple runs. Pedro Vasquez added two hits and three runs scored in the win.
Bethel jumped out early, plating three runs in the first inning and adding another in the second and fourth to build a 5-0 lead.
The Patriots began their comeback in the sixth inning. After loading the bases, Rittenhouse drew a walk to bring in a run before Petrey delivered a sacrifice fly. A passed ball allowed another run to score, cutting the deficit to 5-3.
Cumberlands continued to chip away in the seventh. Dariel Castillo drove in a run with a groundout before Andiarena launched a two-run home run to give UC its first lead of the game at 6-5.
The Patriots broke the game open in the eighth inning, scoring five runs on four hits. Rittenhouse led off the inning with a solo home run before Castillo delivered a two-RBI single. Andiarena added another RBI to extend the lead to 11-5.
UC put the game away in the ninth inning with three more runs. Petrey highlighted the frame with a two-run home run, and the Patriots capped the comeback at 14-5.
Cumberlands will continue the series tomorrow as they look to build on the momentum.
