Barbourville, KY – The twentieth-ranked University of the Cumberlands swept its doubleheader against Union Commonwealth College on Tuesday afternoon, taking game one 7-4 before earning an 11-3 victory in the nightcap. The Patriots improve to 24-13 overall.
Game 1: PATS HOLD OFF FOUR-RUN INNING
Cumberlands jumped out early, scoring in the first inning when Jae Jae Phillips reached on an error, allowing Emily Delgado to cross the plate.
The Patriots added to their lead in the third as Kristen Smith delivered an RBI single to make it 2-0.
Cumberlands broke the game open in the fourth. Grace Ross doubled home a run before aggressive baserunning led to another score, and Smith added an RBI single to extend the lead to 5-0.
Union Commonwealth responded in the bottom half of the inning with four runs to cut the deficit to 5-4.
The Patriots answered in the sixth when Lexie Escamilla delivered a two-RBI single to provide separation and secure the 7-4 victory.
Smith led the offense with three hits and two RBIs, while Escamilla added two RBIs off the bench. Delgado earned the win in the circle, and Cassidy Gentry closed out the final 3.1 innings to earn the save.
Game 2: FIVE-RUN FIRST SETS TONE
Cumberlands came out aggressively in game two, scoring five runs in the opening inning.
After Grace Ross doubled to start the game, Maleah Clinton reached on an error to bring home the first run. Emily Delgado followed with an RBI single before Krystal Anne Castaneda added another RBI. Alyssa Gent capped the inning with a two-RBI double to give the Patriots a 5-0 lead.
Cumberlands added three more runs in the third inning, highlighted by aggressive baserunning and defensive miscues, extending the lead to 8-0.
Union Commonwealth answered with three runs in the bottom half, but the Patriots responded again in the fourth. Jae Jae Phillips drove in two runs and Abby Guinn added an RBI single to push the lead to 10-3.
Cumberlands finished with 15 hits in the contest, led by multi-hit performances from Delgado, Castaneda, White, and Gent.
Brenna Parker earned the win in the circle, while Delgado added a scoreless inning in relief.

Cumberlands will return home to face Georgetown College (Ky.) in a three-game Mid-South Conference series beginning Friday at 5:00 PM, followed by a doubleheader Saturday at 12:00 PM and 2:30 PM at the UC Softball Complex.
