Williamsburg, KY – After playing a pivotal role in their team's success at nationals pitcher Jessica Cord and archer Aiden Woodie have earned Pepsi Athletes of the Week honors, the athletic department announced Monday.
Jessica Cord earned Athlete of the Week honors after anchoring UC's pitching staff to a NAIA World Series appearance. In the NAIA Opening Round the senior pitched 27.1 innings over five appearances, with a 3-0 record and a save to go along with 10 strikeouts and 2.05 ERA. Cord opened the tournament pitching six innings of relief as UC earned the 5-4 win in nine innings. She followed that up with four scoreless innings against Keiser. In the rematch with the Cougars, Cord tossed a complete came scattering four hits and just one earned run, as Cumberlands earned the 3-2 win to fend off elimination. She followed that up pitching 4.1 innings against Keiser with three strikeouts, including coming back in for the final ten outs to pick up the save and force the if necessary game. In the championship game, Cord tallied six innings of work scattering six hits and four strikeouts as the Patriots earned the 6-3 victory to advance to the World Series. That win was also Cord's 24
th win of the season, making her UC's single season leader.
Aiden Woodie earned Athlete of the Week honors after recording a trio of podium finishes, including a pair of national titles. The freshman opened Outdoor Nationals carding a 683 with 39 ten's to qualify second in the men's fixed pins division. Woodie followed that up going a perfect 6-0, including defeating James Brown of Texas A&M 145-139 in the gold medal match to capture his first individual national title. He partnered with Joseph West and Bennett Schuler in the men's fixed pins team division. The trio went 3-0, winning all three matches by at least eight points, including a 211-203 victory over Texas A&M in the gold medal match for his second national title. Woodie capped of the week with a national runner-up finish in the mixed fixed pins division. He teamed with Ayla Mills and the duo won three matches before earning the silver medal. His performance helped Cumberlands to a national runner-up finish in the team standings.
