New Albany, IN – The #21 Cumberlands women's volleyball team utilized a balanced attack and strong defense to earn the 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-21) sweep over IU Southeast Tuesday night. With the win, the Patriots improve to 14-3 as they posted a .404 hitting percentage on the night.
Brynnley Bryant led the way with 13 kills and eight digs, while
Sara Zampedri notched 12 kills and nine digs.
Savanah Jolly tallied 35 assists and 11 digs as
Alana Shiery and Eliana Fischer combined for 11 kills and 10 blocks.
The Patriots opened the match with kills from
Brynnley Bryant and
Zuzanna Wolszewska along with a block from
Alana Shiery and
Elaina Fischer to give UC an 8-3 lead. The two teams traded points before
Sara Zampedri notched a pair of kills, while
Savanah Jolly added an ace extending the lead to 13-7. The two teams went back-and-forth until Bryant made a strong defensive play that led to a kill from
Morgan Bentel, making it a 21-12 advantage. IU Southeast rallied pulling within four points before UC took the first set 25-20.
Cumberlands jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second set after back-to-back aces by Zampedri. The Grenadiers went on 5-1 run to take a lead, however, Fischer and Wolszewska combined for a block putting UC back in front 7-6. The set was tied four times until the Patriots went on a 7-1 run, that featured five assists from Jolly giving UC a 16-11 lead. Fischer and Bryant each tallied back-to-back kills to extend the lead to 21-13. Ryann Livington added an ace, before Shiery and Jolly combined for a block to take the set 25-15 and extend their lead to 2-0.
UC jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the third set, however, IU Southeast used a 7-1 run to take a 8-4 lead. The Patriots started to rally as Jolly notched a kill before connecting with Zampedri, Bryant and Shiery for kills cutting the deficit to 11-9. Cumberlands continued to inch their way back as UC went on 6-1 run capped off by a block from Fischer and Wolszewska to take the 15-14 lead. A few plays later, Zampedri connected a trio of blocks making it 21-18 in favor of Cumberlands. Shiery added a pair of blocks as the Patriots took the set 25-21 and the 3-0 final
Cumberlands returns to the court on Wednesday, September 23
