University of the Cumberlands Athletics

Carola Fontan earned athlete of the week honors after an incredible final site performance helped UC earn a national runner-up finish.  The senior recorded three goals and two assists over the Patriots four matches and scored at least one point in every match.  Fontan opened the tournament connecting with Nicole Araujo for UC’s second goal against #4 College of Idaho, before netting the game-winning goal in double overtime as the Patriots advanced.  Against #5 John Brown, Fontan came up with a huge cross, connecting with Araujo in 89’ as UC earned the 1-0 win.  In the semifinals, the senior scored the game-winning goal as Cumberlands notched the 1-0 win over Oklahoma Wesleyan to advance to the championship match for the second time in three years.  In the championship match, Fontan netted a goal in the 4’ and converted a penalty kick.  For her efforts she was named the NAIA Outstanding Offensive Player of the Tournament.
