Patriot Football Six Point Preview vs. Point

10/10/2018 10:20:00 PM

Williamsburg, KY – Patriot football showed off an extremely potent offense last week in a 67-7 win in the Battle for the Brass Lantern over Union College. Cumberlands now carries their 6-1 overall record (1-1 MSC Appalachian) into this Saturday's contest at the Skyhawks of Point University. Kickoff is set for 1:30 pm at Ram Stadium in Valley, Alabama with video available here. Here are six things to watch for in this weekend's contest.

  1. Don't sleep on the Skyhawks
Point sports a 1-6 record entering the contest this weekend, but these Skyhawks are not a pushover. They average nearly 300 yards of offense per game and just pushed one of the top teams in the NAIA in Reinhardt for three strong quarters of play before Eagles would pull away late.

  1. Force confusion while on defense.
Currently, the Skyhawks have a balanced offensive game, averaging 143 yards on the ground and 147 yards through the air. Last week, the Patriots forced the Bulldogs of Union to abandon parts of their game because of the number of defensive schemes UC sent their way. Another week like that will prove to be detrimental to the Patriots' opposition.

  1. Take pride in the kicking game.
The Patriots saw some struggles in their kicking game last week. Two kickoffs would sail out of bounds, one point after attempt would sail wide, and a final PAT was blocked. These are things to avoid as sometimes they can be momentum builders for the opponent.

  1. Control the pace of play.
UC ran the ball for 495 yards last week against Union on just 42 attempts. Time of possession was not a true necessity in that game, but if you can control the tempo of the contest, games tend to go your way more often.

  1. Force the turnover.
Point has a -2-turnover margin on the season and had four last week against Reinhardt while laying the ball down one other time. The Patriots however have a turnover margin of +7 on the season. If you can take advantage and score on turnovers that are forced, the Skyhawks will have a tough time staying in the contest, especially if they average just 17.1 points per game.

  1. Keep your focus one game at a time.
This time of year, teams tend to look ahead at opposition that is ahead on the schedule. UC and Head Coach Matt Rhymer have done a great job thus far is keeping their eyes on the prize but doing so one game at a time. Looking ahead can take away your focus on the big picture, which in turn can cost your team the game as well as your big goal at the end of the year. Don't let distractions take you away from the dedication your teams needs you to have.
