Williamsburg, KY – The University of the Cumberlands football team has garnered a lot of attention thus far this season as they are off to their best start since 2013. After a 35-21 win over Campbellsville last week, the Patriots are now 4-0 and have climbed to #16 in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches Poll. This week, UC returns to the road as they head north to face the Knights of Kentucky Christian University. Kickoff is set for 1:30 pm with live video available here. As UC looks to go unbeaten in non-conference play, here are six things to watch for in this weekend's contest.
- Aim for lucky number seven.
UC currently carries a six game winning streak into Saturday's contest dating back to last season. The Patriots are also 6-0 all-time against the Knights, outscoring KCU 266-63 for an average of 41-10.
- Utilize the blitz effectively.
The Knights' quarterbacks have struggled with pressure this season as three quarterbacks have combined to throw 10 interceptions and complete just 43.8% of their passes. If the Patriots can keep the Knights guessing throughout the day with a number of effective blitz packages, it could be a long day for KCU.
- UC linemen must seal off their blocks.
Both KCU starting linebackers Austin Archey and Harmand St. Hubert have combined for 88 total tackles already this season. UC's offensive linemen must come off the ball quickly and seal them off for the Patriots' running game to have the success it has had this season.
- Don't allow the Knights' short passing game to flourish.
KCU's passing game may not be the most efficient when it comes to completion percentage, but the Knights do a solid job of accumulating yards after the catch. The Patriots' secondary must step up to the challenge of breaking up short passes as well as limiting the Knights' receivers to minimal yardage if they do come up with the catch.
- Distance is UC's friend.
UC's kicking game has been fantastic this season. The two Patriot kickers
Nick Amaya and
Anthony Velasquez have booted 13 touchbacks off kickoffs this year, averaging 62.3 yards per kickoff. Punter
Devon McMillin has also done a great job pinning opponents deep in their own territory, averaging 43.4 yards per punt with four over 50 yards and six inside the opponent's 20 yard line. KCU has only two scoring drives this year of 75+ yards.
- Take advantage of turnovers.
The Patriots have done a great job this year of limiting turnovers while forcing their share of giveaways as well. UC has a +6 turnover margin while the Knights have a -8 turnover margin. If Cumberlands can take advantage by scoring off turnovers, the Knights will struggle to stay in the game.
