Williamsburg, KY – Cumberlands football continues to climb throughout the rankings in the NAIA as they push forward with ample success. A 26-8 victory last weekend against Cumberland University advanced the ninth-ranked Patriots to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in Mid-South Conference Bluegrass Division play. Now, UC looks to stay unbeaten as they host the Tigers of Campbellsville University for Homecoming 2019 on Saturday, October 26th with kickoff set for 7 PM. Live video is available on the UC Sports Network here. With game day just around the corner, here are six things to watch for in this weekend's contest.
- Control the recent historical trend.
Cumberlands has had the number of the Tigers in recent history. Although it is the third longest rivalry in the UC football program's history, much of the Patriots' success has come as of late. UC has won the last two meetings and 14 of the last 15 meetings against the Tigers including seven of the last eight in Williamsburg.
2. Exploit the turnover margin.
UC has done a fantastic job with staying on the positive side of the turnover margin at +4. On the flip side, Campbellsville has struggled on the flip side as they are currently -12 on the turnover margin. If you are UC, you must exploit this and as quickly as you can. The earlier you can build a sizable lead, the quicker the Tigers will lay down.
3. Keep Campbellsville guessing.
In recent history, UC has shown to have a prolific run game that has dominated teams into submission. Now, the Patriot offense may be the most balanced in the program's history. This is where Cumberlands must keep the Tigers on their toes. Yes, the weather could play a factor in how much UC can go to their passing game, but if they are successful with the passing game, then beware Tigers.
4. Cause mayhem on defense.
Campbellsville's offense has been somewhat stagnant in 2019, seeing their total offense per game, scoring offense per game, and rushing offense per game all ranking in the bottom 25% of the MSC. Their passing offense is better, but still in the bottom half of the conference. The Patriots must come out with a number of difference defensive package to throw off the Tigers and keep them off-balance.
5. Shut down their offensive trio for major success.
The offensive trio of running back David Robinson (368 yards, 4 TDs), quarterback Talaileva Sufia 1,077 pass. yds., 10 TDs), and wide receiver Kendon Young (644 rec. yds., 5 TDs) has produced a large chunk of the offense for the Tigers. Simple enough, shut them down and their offense struggles to get out of the gate. They don't produce if those three can't get open.
6. Continue to push big play buttons with your defense and special teams packages.
UC has come up big in the last couple of weeks when it comes to defense and special teams. Last week, Brad Montgomery was huge with a blocked punt which he recovered for a touchdown (POW worthy in my opinion). Two weeks ago, it was a coffin cornered punt pinning Bethel on their one yard line before a strip, scoop, and score by Kumi Sarpong, Jr. (also POW worthy if you ask me). Look to make it happen for a third consecutive week. Make the big play and let's see how quickly the Tigers can find a way to respond.
