Patriots Extend Lead behind Six Wins and Three MSC Conference Records

Kingsport, TN – The second-ranked UC women's swimming & diving team took top honors in six of the seven events, breaking three conference records, to extend their lead after the second day of competition at the Mid-South Conference Championships.  The Patriots have recorded 482 points for the meet and 12 swims that finished in the top eight of their respective events.

Cumberlands opened the session with Houston Burgoon, Rebecca Loftus, Cameron Klimczak, and Katy Smeltzer teaming up to win the 200 free relay with a time of 1:38.12. It was the third straight relay that UC has won during these championships.

Christina Klouda captured UC's first individual title of the day as she took top honors in the 400 IM. Klouda, the top-ranked swimmer in the NAIA, touched the wall in 4:29.98 to set a new MSC conference record.  Casey Walin posted a fifth-place finish with a time of 4:43.21, while Sara Overly swam 4:49.21 to place sixth.

Mendy De Rooi tallied her second individual conference championship of the meet as she set a new MSC and program record with a time of 54.67.  De Rooi broke the previous conference record by three seconds.  Smeltzer touched the wall in 59.46 to place fifth, while Houston Burgoon won the consolation final with a time of 1:00.43.  Kennedy Kirks (1:01.98) and Faith Lawler (1:04.12) finished 11th and 18th, respectfully.

In the 100 breast, Yuliia Hnidenko touched the wall in 1:05.23 to earn the conference title.  That time is the second fastest time in the NAIA this season. Klimczak posted a 1:08.79 to place fifth in the event.

Klouda dominance of the Mid-South Conference Championships continued as she won the 100 back with a time of 58.36.  The win is her 11th individual conference title of her career.  Nicole Ceausu notched a season-best time of 1:02.53 to earn a sixth place finish, while Lawler (1:05.74) and Kristi Burnette (1:05.99) finished 14th and 15th, respectfully.

Leah Thomas, Cumberlands lone swimmer in the 200 free, touched the wall in 2:00.18 to finish sixth.

In the final event of the day, the 400 medley relay, Klouda, Hnidenko, De Rooi, and Smeltzer joined forces to swim 3:53.03.  That time is the fastest time in the NAIA this season and broke the MSC record by three seconds.

The Patriots will return to the water Saturday, February 2, when they take part in the final day of competition at the MSC Championships.  Prelims are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. while finals are slated to start at 5 p.m. Live video of the finals as well as the first heat of the 1650 free will be available here.
