Williamsburg, KY –
Bryce Nickel,
Jacob McNutt and
Max Emerson each heard the official hit the mat in the first Mid-South Conference match of the season, claiming pins in the opening minutes. The Patriots win the midweek showdown against the Midway Eagles, 43-6.
The Patriots claimed all but one weight class in the win, charting three pins, one tech, two majors and two decisions. The Patriots matched the 2019 final score in the Wednesday night victory, now 9-3 in dual meet action.
Nickel opened the dual meet at 141, noting the fall after 4:32 of action. Midway's Anthony Caruso scored the first takedown of the bout, collecting a good amount of riding time in the first two periods. The 10th-ranked man collected his sixth pin of the year after a second-period takedown.
At 165, McNutt flipped over Midway's Frank Vidales with 51 seconds remaining in the first period. The fifth-ranked man at the class initially came close to the pin with back-to-back four-point nearfalls to take the 10-0 match lead. McNutt earned his sixth win by fall as well, his first of the new year.
One takedown was all Emerson needed in his 184 match-up, noting the fastest pin of the day with 1:40 used in the first period. The senior tallied his second pin of the week having won by fall over the weekend at the Missouri Valley Invite.
The three pins boosted the Patriots to 50 team wins by fall in the 2019-20 campaign.
Austin Franco racked up 19 match points on five takedowns and two nearfalls en route to the 19-4 tech fall in the final bout of the night at 125. The freshman faired well in his Patriot debut, extending the score margin to 28 unanswered points.
The match was within reach for Midway at 24-6 when
Ramsey Bloy stepped onto the mat for the 15th time this season at 197. Fourth-ranked Bloy was quick to work, taking down Midway's Carle Whitehead four times before the clock ran out. The senior secured the Patriots 14th-straight MSC victory with the 11-3 major.
Chasen Brown made his first appearance at 149 since the Fire Duals in November, taking the win on a 10-4 verdict. The sophomore worked well from a neutral position, raking in three takedowns, but also closed out the bout with a last-second reversal.
Working hard at heavyweight,
Aaron Johnson kept pace for the Patriots, following Bloy with another 11-3 major. In a tight 2-1 battle in the opening period, Johnson opened the throttle and rattled off three takedowns over the next four minutes on his way to the win.
Brady Emerson also pulled out a win prior to his brothers, securing a heavily contested 4-1 decision. The 174-pounder claimed the only takedown of the bout in the first period, riding the three periods out without being taken to the mat himself.
Cumberlands men's wrestling are next bound up I-75 for Crestview Hills, KY. The Patriots will battle the Saints of Thomas More in a 7 PM thriller on the away mats.
