Williamsburg, KY – Patriots esports competed in double-header action on Friday evening, taking on West Virginia Tech in Super Smash Bros before facing off with Butler College in Rainbow Six: Siege. UC fell in Super Smash but notched their second R6 win of the season, defeating Butler 2-1.
Super Smash Brothers
L, 0-2 vs WVU Tech
West Virginia Tech was the challenger in Friday's smash action as the Patriots continued play in the NACE Fall Smash bracket. The Golden Bears had considerable success early, with the first player in their lineup sweeping the top half of the Patriots lineup. UC's number four,
Austin Gabehart rose to the challenge, draining all three stocks of WVUT's number one guy, finally knocking him out of the match. Gabehart won a consecutive battle against the next Golden Bear, only losing one stock in the process. WVU Tech's third competitor finally took down Gabehart as the Golden Bears claimed the victory.
Super Smash Bros is a fighting game series which features a host of different characters from various Nintendo games. In tournament play, each team has a four player lineup, each player equipped with three stocks the challenger attempts to diminish. Competition begins with the first player in each lineup going head-to-head, when a player in a team's lineup is wiped out, the next player steps into the arena. Whichever team wipes out all four of the opposing players wins the match.
Rainbow Six: Siege
W, 2-1 vs Butler College (4-7, 7-5, 7-2)
Match number four of the season featured UC against Butler College in Collegiate R6 Tournament play. The Patriots notched their second victory of the season, defeating the Bulldogs 2-1.
The Patriots' single loss of the day came in round one to the Bulldogs, as Butler claimed the 7-4 victory. UC was without key player Matt King, who was still competing in the Smash Brothers tournament.
Blake Gray had a standout performance in round one, recording 16 kills to lead the Pats.
The Patriots regrouped for the second round of action, aided by the return of
Matthew King, going on to win seven games in the 12-game round to claim the 7-5 victory. UC began the game on the defensive, stringing together an excellent strategy to thwart the Bulldog's attack. The Patriots remained poised on the offensive end as well, maintaining their lead and eventually winning the match.
Matthew King returned in a big way, finishing with 18 kills to lead all players.
In the final round of the day, UC managed its best performance of the day, defeating Butler 7-5.
Blake Gray had yet another impressive match, tallying 14 kills, upping his total to 37 on the day. The Patriots claimed the 2-1 victory to improve to 2-2 in the Rainbow Six: Siege circuit.
Rainbow Six Siege is a first-person shooter that challenges players to strategize both an attack and defense of an objective. In tournament play, teams decide whether to attack or defend which they will do for six rounds of play before switching sides. At the end of the 12 rounds whichever team has won the most rounds claims victory.
