Bowling Green, KY – The Mid-South wrestling championship concluded with Cumberlands wrestling claiming their second MSC tournament title in the last three years. As a team they scored 176.5 points earning four individual titles, two second place finishes, and one third place finish.
The Patriots also swept the post season awards winning wrestler of the year, freshman of the year, and coach of the year.
Senior,
Tres Leon earned his third career MSC First-Team All-Conference award. He went 4-0 in this year's tournament winning his first two matches by fall, his semi-final with a 18-6 major decision, and the final with a 9-4 decision. The dominant performance from Leon all year landed him his third MSC Wrestler of the Year award. The Kaukauna, WI native defeated two ranked wrestlers en route to being the top wrestler at 149.
Starting his UC career off right,
Bryce Nickel earned the MSC Freshman of the Year Award. Nickel was the only freshman to win his weight class for the Patriots. He improved to 30 wins on the year after he went 3-0 in the 141-weight class bracket. Two of his wins came from decisions and his semifinal victory had to go to overtime. But the freshman proved himself as the victor taking down his opponent just 28 seconds into overtime.
The 197 final featured two Patriots, the only finals to have two wrestlers from the same team. Both
Ramsey Bloy and
Eric Deluse have been top performers all year ranked fifth and fourth respectively. Deluse's one loss of the season came from Bloy earlier in the year, but Deluse took the win this time with a 4-2 decision claiming the 197 championship. This is his first career MSC First Team All-Conference award.
Deluse picked up three wins one by tech fall, the decision in the championship, and a sudden victory like Nickel in the semifinals. The senior now has 23 wins on the year. This is his first career MSC First-Team All-Conference award.
Bloy earned MSC Second-Team All-Conference for the second straight year. The senior finished the tournament with a 3-1 record including two decisions and a fall. He ties his season high for wins with 21 thanks to his finish this weekend.
Junior,
Jacob Seto picked up his first career MSC title resulting in First-Team All-Conference accolades. Seto picked up three wins all from decisions amassing ten points and giving up just four points. The Elk Grove, CA native has beaten his single season record in a Patriot uniform by 14 since he now has 32 wins for 2019-20.
Heavyweight,
Aaron Johnson has his highest finish at the MSC tournament coming in second. He earned three wins to put him into the finals against the #1 wrestler, Brandon Reed. Johnson would lose by a 3-1 to earn MSC Second-Team All-Conference honors.
The only third place finisher was
Austin Franco at 125. The freshman made it all the way to the semifinals before losing his first match of the tournament. After the loss he had to battle back and win two more matches to secure the third-place finish. Two of his wins were from decisions and the other was from a 18-1 tech fall.
Head Coach
Jordan Countryman won his first career MSC Coach of the Year Award. The team won the MSC North Regular Season title as well as the 2019-2020 tournament. Behind Countryman's leadership the team went 12-3 overall including nine wins over ranked opponents.
