Patriots Captured MSC Indoor Conference Crown; Tallied 7 Conference Champions

Entering the day two points back after mixed team rounds, the UC Archery team came out ready to perform tallying a championships best seven gold medals and seven silver medals to capture the Mid-South Conference Indoor Archery Championship Sunday afternoon at the Western Kentucky Archery Complex.  The Patriots recorded 174 points to capture its third MSC indoor crown in program history.

"This was a great team effort throughout the entire weekend," said Head Coach Kris Strebeck. "We saw a lot of archer step off and it was a great display of the hard work that each of these archers put in every day during practice.  It's always a great day when we can bring home a championship.:

Madison Cox started the day off for UC by capturing her second individual conference title of the season.  The sophomore won her first two matches to advance to the semifinals against teammate Kailtyn Shields.  Cox won that match 149-147 before defeating Molly Gawedzinski of Union 148-143 in the gold medal match.  Shields, who entered as the fourth-seed, knocked of a pair of Blue Raiders to reach the semifinals and earn five points for the Patriots. 

Cumberlands other individual conference title came in the women's recurve division as the Patriots notched a one-two finish.  Top-seed Miranda Lauria tallied a pair of 6-0 wins of Josie Camacho (Georgetown) and Olivia Harner (Lindsey Wilson) to advance to the championship match.  On the other side of the bracket, third-seed Emily Cardis knocked off Bailey Robinson 6-2, before defeating second-seed Ana McFarland 6-4 to qualify for her first gold medal match.  In the championship match, Lauria and Cardis were tied after the first and second end, before Lauria pulled out the 6-2 win to earn the gold.

In addition to those conference titles, UC notched three other silver medals during the individual shootdowns.  One of the most impressive runs came in the women's compound bracket, where 12th-seed Madison Grimm knocked off the #1, #4, and #5 seed to advance to the championship match.  Grimm opened the day defeating #5 Natalie Brockman (LWC) 146-140, before knocking off #4 Brooke Miller 142-140.  The sophomore then knocked off top-sed Raegan Bender (Union) 144-142 to reach the gold medal match before earning silver.

Aaron Adams (men's bowhunter) and Elijah Crawford (men's barebow) also notched silver medals.  Adams tallied a pair of impressive wins to reach the semifinals where he faced-off against teammate Carson Sapp.  The senior got the better of Sapp as he won 145-144 to reach the championship match before falling 147-145.  Sapp went on to earn the bronze medal and six points for UC.  Crawford blanked his first two opponents 6-0, 6-0 to reach the gold medal match.  Trailing early, Crawford scored three straight points before earning the silver after a 4-6 final.

Leading in the standings heading into team rounds the Patriots refused to layoff the pedal winning gold in each of the first team rounds contested.  In men's barebow team, Crawford, Bradley Faulkner, and Alexander Legg teamed up for a 6-2 win over UPike in the gold medal match.  There Patriots counterpart of Kimberly Wheat, Alexandra Elzy, and Whitney Vandiver posted a clean 6-0 sweep over Lindsey Wilson. In women's recurve, Bailey Robinson joined Lauria and Cardis for a 6-2 win over the Blue Raiders.

In the final round, the trio of Cox, Shields, and Sara Sherman notched a 231-220 win over Union in the semifinals before defeating Pikeville 234-232 in the gold medal match of women's bowhunter to earn 10 points.  Cumberlands final gold medal came in the men's compound as Adams, Sapp, and Jase Boils knocked off Union 233-230 for the top spot on the podium.
 
The Patriots have now won each of the first two legs of the MSC championship.  Cumberlands leads the overall standings with 20 points, while Lindsey Wilson is in second place with 16 points. 

UC now shifts focus to outdoor season and will return to the field April 7-10 for USA Archery Outdoor Regional and the MSC outdoor conference championships taking place on the UC All-Purpose Field.
