Williamsburg, KY - UC esports competed in three games on the week, suffering losses in all three matchups. Despite being unable to grab a win in any of their contests during the week, Cumberlands can feel good about how competitive each matchup was as they pushed each of their opponents to the brink.
Rocket League
UC matched up with Northern Kentucky on Monday (Nov. 1) and was unable to come away winners. The Patriots and Norse battled each other for as long as they could as the match lasted five games, the first of Cumberlands' Rocket League campaign.Â
The Patriots fired the opening salvo as Ellis Courtland (Goldencourt9 ^-^) found the back of the net a minute and a half into game one. NKU respond midway through the match, knotting things up at 1-1, making for an interesting game the rest of the way. The two teams were deadlocked at one all until a last-second shot from Tenner Edelen (Txnr) gave UC the win in game one and the momentum heading into the middle games of the match.
Cumberlands was not able to make good on their match opening win as they dropped games two and three by a final of 2-1 and 4-0. After taking game one, the Patriot's backs were against the wall as they needed to stage a comeback in game four to keep their hopes alive.
Both teams understood how crucial game number four of the match was and they played like, resulting in a thrilling overtime contest. It seemed like NKU had an advantage with them having a one-goal lead and :30 remaining in the game, but that was thwarted on a goal from Jackson Moore (oqya.) as he helped force overtime. A solid touch from Courtland coming off the back line helped him sneak the ball in one minute into extra time, giving UC the 5-4 to force a game five.
The deciding game of the match did not go the way UC was hoping as they fell by a final of 6-2. The game started off well for the Patriots as Edelen found the back of the net just seven seconds into the game. That early lead did not amount to much as the Norse rattled off five unanswered goals on their way to the comfortable win.
League of Legends
Cumberlands competed against the Saint Thomas Bobcats on Tuesday in the Mid-South League of Legends playoffs, looking to advance to the final round. UC had not fared well against STU in League of Legends play as the Patriots had dropped both of their prior matches with the Bobcats. A third loss was added on Tuesday night as UC fell to Saint Thomas in a 2-0 sweep.
UC was able to hang with the Bobcats through the first 20 minutes of action in game one but after that it was all STU. Saint Thomas went on a two minutes run where they outscored the Patriots in kills 2-6 while grabbing a commanding 10k lead in gold. The Bobcats continually built on that advantage as they took game on handedly.
Game number two was a much closer contest as both teams were chipping away at each other's nexus in the waning seconds. UC focused on dominating the entire map while STU was aggressive in trying to rush their opponent's base.Â
After the Patriots claimed a solid lead in gold and in kills, they began to hone in on their counterpart's nexus and try for the win 33 minutes into the game. It ended up being a little too late of a push, though, as the Bobcats attack had already pushed too far in to be stopped.Â
Rainbow Six: Siege
After seeing a two week hiatus, UC's Rainbow Six team was back at it. They closed out the week against Florida Polytechnic and were defeated in a sweep in the best-of-three match. Both games proved to be close ones as the final results was in balance until the very end. The Patriots were able to hang around with the Phoenix in the early part of action, but ended up fading in the end, resulting in the loss.
