Bowling Green, KY – For the second straight week,
Jesse Kirby has been named the Mid-South Conference Wrestler of the Week, announced by conference officials on Monday.
Once again Kirby was impressive on the mats, this week she went 6-0 at the Warrior Open to earn her first individual title of her career. All of her wins were by falls, marking her the only wrestler of the tournament to do so. The Culpeper, VA native never went to the second period of a match, pinning her opponents in a total time of 8:03.
Her championship of the 191-weight class came against top competitors, she defeated three wrestlers in the top-20 including one in the top-ten. But Kirby, who is ranked #5 herself proved to be too dominant for all six of her opponents.
The 191-weight class was in a round-robin format, where Kirby took down every wrestler in her class. Her first bout was against #15 Liliana Vergara from Campbellsville. Kirby had the 4-2 advantage before putting Vergara on her back for Kirby's first pin and win of the tournament at 1:55. Kirby's second matchup proved to be her toughest one, up against Catherine Palmieri, ranked #10 from Life. Palmieri got out to an early 2-0 lead, but Kirby answered back immediately with a two-point takedown of her own. Palmieri earned one more point, before Kirby went on a 7-0 run and then flipped Palmieri on her back for a fall at 2:23. That would prove to be the longest time Kirby was on the mat for the rest of the tournament.
In her third match, Kirby battled 19
th ranked Perla Ramirez from Indiana Tech. It was all Kirby from the start of the match, going up 5-0 in the first minute and a half before pinning Ramirez at 1:57.
In the junior's final three matches, Kirby was on each mat for less than a minute. She never surrendered an in-match point, winning the matches via fall at 51, 31, and 26 seconds respectively.
This marks the third MSC Weekly Award for Kirby's career, she won last week as well to become the first wrestler in the conference history to win back-to-back weeks. She joins
Chamira Cooper as the two UC wrestlers to win the award this season.
On the year, Kirby has a 19-3 season record with her last nine wins all coming via falls. This season she has a total of 14 fall victories to lead the team.
The Patriots will return to the mats in the next calendar year, kicking off the 2022 portion of their season on January 6. They will compete in the two-day NWCA National Duals in Louisville, KY.
