Box Score Marion, NC – Baseball picked up another win to close out their weekend at Big League Camp with a 5-0 record. The Patriots picked up their second win against Midway this weekend in a 7-1 rout.
Candido Encarnacion went 2-2 with a single run batted in, while teammate
Jose Rojas noted the only other multi-hit game on the Patriots lineup. The first baseman tabbed one RBI and a run scored as well.
Meanwhile
Rollin Layton got his first start of the season. In his four-inning outing, the junior right-hander allowed one run on three hits. He delivered three strikeouts in the game.
Bryan Leef was the most successful baserunner of the day, starting off the day getting hit by a pitch to keep up his on-base percentage. After stealing second, his fifth successful stolen base this season, Rojas singled to shallow right field to score the first run of the game.
Back-to-back hits drove in the lone Midway run of the game in the second inning. From that point on, the Eagles would only see one more hit against Layton and not score a run.
Effective base running was the answer again in the bottom of the inning.
Ray Villanueva noted a single to lead off the inning, followed quickly with his fourth stolen base of 2021.
Kevin Rolon drove home Villanueva on a single to left-center, putting the Patriots back ahead 2-1.
Rojas led off with a heavy hit in the third, beginning a rally to score a pair more runs. A double deep into left field put him in scoring position, followed up by
Rolando Rodriguez doubling to the same spot as well.
Carter Grooms, pinch running for Rodriguez, scored his ninth run this season thanks to Encarnacion's first hit of the morning.
Over Torres did not register a hit in the game until the fourth inning, singling down the left field line to plate Nazario. Nazario rounded three bases on the batted ball, after reaching previously on a walk. The Patriots threaten again in fifth after Encarnacion doubled to move Grooms to third, but Cumberlands left both on in the inning.
Leef rounded out the day in the bottom of the sixth with another homerun under his belt. He sent the ball over the left field wall, scoring
Andres Rolon and himself. It was his fifth homer of the season, second while at Big League Camp.
Dawson Young pitched effectively in the final inning of the contest, his second appearance of the season on the mound. He dropped all three outs of the final frame on strikes, giving up a lone walk.
Also making an appearance out of the bullpen,
Jacob Ayala and
Chase Whitaker both went three-up, three-down as they worked through their rotations in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively. Both charted one strikeout in their inning of work.
In five games played in the Battle at Big League, Cumberlands scored 48 runs, an average of over nine runs per game. Meanwhile, the pitching staff allowed only 13 runs. The closest score margin of the weekend was five runs, noted in a pair of games against Montreat and Midway on Friday.
Now 9-0 on the season, Cumberlands baseball looks to continue their winning ways back on home ground this week. Patriots will see Brescia for a doubleheader on Tuesday at Doyle Buhl Stadium. First pitch is set for 1 PM.
