2/23/2021 7:03:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Williamsburg, KY – Patriots sweep Brescia in a pair of games at Doyle Buhl Stadium thanks to Pedro Nazario's big day at the plate. Cumberlands scored their 100th run of the season in the opening game of the series, winning 14-3, and walked off in extra innings in game two 6-5.

Nazario was the day's best hitter, going 4-5 at the plate with a homerun, two doubles and a sacrifice fly. He batted in seven of the Patriots' 20 runs of the day, crossing home plate four times.

After the pair of wins, Cumberlands remains undefeated on the season at 11-0.

Game Two: Cumberlands wins, 6-5 (8 innings)
The score was 5-3 in Brescia's favor when Ray Villanueva stepped into the batter's box; two outs showed on the scoreboard with one runner on. Fourth pitch comes in and the junior roped the ball over the left field fence to tie the game. It was the homerun hero's third run of the game as the Patriots rallied for a comeback.

In the bottom of the eighth, Brian Garcia sent a ball deep into right-center to collect three bases. Threatening in scoring position, Frank Garcia dropped his hit into shallow outfield grass for the walk-off RBI.

Garrett Vathroder collected his first win of the season after effectively pitching in the top of the inning. He struck out a pair of Bearcats to retire the side.

Starting on the mound, Garrett DeClue earned both runs in the opening inning of game two, however staved off any more to keep the Patriots in position to make the comeback. In four innings of work, the sophomore dropped 10 batters on strikes, the team's best pitching performance of the season in terms of strikeouts. Included in the stretch was striking out three in the fourth inning to strand three Bearcats on.

With two runs against in the opening inning, Nazario scored the opening run of the game on Bryan Leef's fielder's choice. Nazario doubled in the second inning to tie up the contest at two each, bringing in Kevin Rolon.

The Patriots took the lead in the fourth, 3-2, with Nazario's sacrifice fly to score Candido Encarnacion. Though still threatening, the inning ended on a Brescia appeal that a runner left early on the fly.

Cumberlands relinquished their lead after a late spur by Brescia on a two-RBI single shallow in the outfield. The Patriots were unable to score in the fifth and sixth; Villanueva saved the day as the Patriots batted in the bottom of the final inning for the first time this season.

Nazario went 2-2 in the second game, with two RBI and two runs scored. Villanueva was the only other Patriot to have multiple hits in the final game, going 3-4 at the plate.

Game One: Cumberlands wins, 14-3
Cumberlands put runs on the board in each of the first five innings of the game, highlighted by Nazario charting the team's third grand slam of the season.

Brian Juarez earned one run in the opening inning between the two teams, he escaped the side and stranded two on. He only recorded one out in the second before being relieved by Jake Kampen, coming in to dish a strikeout and a foul flyout to strand three more Bearcats on in the second.

Kampen collected his first win of 2021, working the hill for 4.2 innings. He earned two runs on three hits late in his appearance while dropping three on strikes.

Cumberlands responded to the Brescia run in the first with two of their own. Nazario started his day with a double to deep left-center field; he was brought in by Villanueva's single. The Pats noted another hit in the form of Jose Rojas before infield miscommunication resulted in another run stretched onto the board.

The day's grand slam was routed over the high left field wall in in the second inning, Nazario's third homer of the year. Two singles and a walk juiced the bases for the senior infielder.

With the 6-1 advantage, four walks to five batters resulted in a pair of runs for the Patriots as they threatened with bases loaded. K. Rolon and Nazario were credited with the RBI in their free passes on base. Villanueva sacrificed a fly ball to right field to plate the third run of the inning.

Back-to-back singles to open the fourth inning also led to runs. Catcher Rolando Rodriguez, third up in the frame, doubled to deep center field to score both Rojas and B. Garcia. Another double in the inning by K. Rolon scored courtesy runner Carter Grooms.

Patriots bats continued to swing in pairs. Andres Rolon tallied his first homerun of the season on his second pitch taken in. Leef followed with a homerun of his own four pitches later. It was his 35th career homerun with the Patriots, where he stands second all-time in the record books.

Sabastian Zayas, pinch hitting in the fifth inning as the Patriots controlled the game 14-3, doubled his hit against the left-center fence for his first completed at bat. It was the Patriots fourth of five doubles chalked up on the day.

The Patriots did not score a run in the sixth inning but their 11-run margin was enough to keep the win in hand. Nazario, Rojas, B. Garcia, Encarnacion and K. Rolon each noted a multi-hit game to start off the day.
