Patriots Suffer Second Season Loss to Blue Raiders

2/26/2021 7:28:00 PM

Box Score Columbia, KY – In their first road contest of the season, a slow offensive start led to the Patriots second loss of the season. Cumberlands fell to Bluegrass-rival Lindsey Wilson on Friday afternoon, 45-10, to move to 1-2 on the season.

Darius Young noted his second 100-plus yard game of the season, hauling in 110 yards on 10 receptions. His longest of day brought the Patriots into the redzone on a 61-yard long ball.

While Young was held scoreless in the contest, it was TJ Williams putting six on the board. The Georgia-product found the endzone for the third time of his career on a four-yard pass from Nathan Arnold in the third quarter.

The score was a result of a five play, 15-yard drive. JR Smith picked off the Blue Raiders at midfield and returned it 34 yards into the endzone to set the offense up with great field position, leading to the trip to the endzone.

Smith almost had another takeaway in the third quarter as he worked to break up another pass to the endzone. On the drive, the Blue Raiders turned over the ball on downs.

Tripp Holloway capped off the Patriots scoring with his first collegiate field goal. The offense moved up to the 15-yard line to allow the rookie to set up on the 32-yard attempt.

In addition to Smith's interception, the Patriots took another from the Blue Raiders' passing game. Adam Chaney stepped up to make the grab off a deflected target. He finished the day with the team's third-most tackles at six, a pair being solo.

Leading the team was Walker Dunn, recording 12 tackles in the secondary. Over the stretch, he was responsible seven times as the lone man making the stop. Meanwhile, Zeke More stood out with nine tackles, also recording seven solo.

The Patriots saw 209 yards of offense against the Blue Raiders, a majority coming through the air. Young was the leader with his 110-yard game, while tight-end Chase Overstreet offered three catches for almost 20 yards.

Splitting time under center were Gavin Wilkinson and Nathan Arnold, taking a half each. In the first, rookie arm Wilkinson tossed for 114 of the Patriots 147 passing yards, noting nine completions. Arnold threw the lone touchdown in the game in one of his seven completions.

The Blue Raiders pinched the Patriots run game. Martize Smith attempted to get the ball moving late in the day with nine rushes for 37 yards. Zalon Reynolds was held to 29 yards on 10 attempts.

Lindsey Wilson beat the Patriots on both sides of the ball, holding the offense to only eight first downs while their own totaled 430 net yards. A pair of scores came on the ground while four passes were successfully routed into the endzone.

In addition to the pair of interceptions, the Patriots defense was able to hustle the pocket and chart three sacks. Demone (DJ) Smith and Kumi Sarpong, Jr. both registered solo sacks for a combined 10 yards lost, while Kendall Adams-Young and Myles Simon worked together to bring down the opposing passer.

Cumberlands has time off to recoup after the loss. With the bye week ahead, the Patriots continue a three-game stint on the road with a trip to McKenzie, TN. There, the Patriots will meet Bethel for the first time at Wildcat Stadium since 2017, only the third time in program history. It is slated to be an 8 PM eastern kickoff in the Wildcat's home opener.
