Patriots Fall to Bulldogs in Top-Three Match Up

3/17/2021 4:40:00 PM

Box Score Williamsburg, KY - In a marquee matchup on Wednesday, the #3 Patriots were defeated by #1 Tennessee Wesleyan, 5-0. The loss was the second-time the Patriots fell to the Bulldogs this season, moving them to 20-4 overall.

Jose Rojas, Rolando Rodriguez, and Kevin Rolon all notched hits in the game. Rojas and Rolon have now registered hits in three straight games dating back to Cumberlands' win over Bethel over the weekend.

Jake Kampen got the start on the mound for Cumberlands and recorded four strikeouts over four and a third innings while earning two runs on five hits. The loss for Kampen is his first of the season and moves him to a 1-1 on the year. Five pitchers saw action from the bullpen on Wednesday, including Kampen, Garrett DeClue, Dawson Young, Moise Carrasco, and Corey Linz.

Kampen robbed the visiting team a runner in the fourth, picking off the runner at send with a quick turn-around and snap throw to second. Pedro Nazario and Candido Encarnacion offered a helping hand on the run down.

Neither side was able to plate a run through the first four innings as Kampen pitched effectively in the early going. Tennessee Wesleyan was first to score in the fifth with aline drive homerun over the fence in right field to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead. DeClue came in to pitch and was able to get UC out of the inning without any further danger. A fantastic pick-off by DeClue, Rojas and Rolon help the Pats clear the base path again.

A walk and a hit in the bottom of the fifth helped the Patriots get a runner in scoring position. However, a fly out and a pop out would end the threat and keep UC off the board.

In the top of the sixth, a right field single gave the Bulldogs a 4-0 lead, scoring a runner from third. Following the score, a bunt threatened another run but a toss from Young to Rodriguez was in time for the catcher to apply the tag on the squeeze play. The visitors added another run in the top of the ninth to make the score 5-0 on a sacrifice fly, Bryan Leef making the sliding catch in center field.

The Patriots will look to bounce back as they travel to Martin Methodist for a Mid-South Conference matchup this weekend. Friday's game is scheduled for 4 PM eastern with Saturday's doubleheader taking place at 2 PM eastern.
