Box Score Georgetown, KY – Patriots hold off Georgetown in the second road conference series of the season. With the Tigers threatening in the bottom of the ninth,
Garrett Vathroder delivered the final strikeout to strand the home team with the winning run on.
Cumberlands got off to an early 3-0 lead in the second inning, thanks to
Pedro Nazario's triple down the right field line. Earlier in the inning,
Bryan Leef led off with a single, bunted over by
Brian Garcia, and scored on a
Rolando Rodriguez batted ball.
The bats struck gold again in the third. With one out recorded, back-to-back hits by
Jose Rojas and Leef put runners on.
Candido Encarnacion cleared the bases with a double to deep left field. The third baseman crossed home plate and into the dugout on a pair of passed balls, moving the lead to 6-0.
Colton Easterwood recorded his sixth start of the season under the lights, pitching 6.1 innings from the hill. He delivered six strikeouts in 108 pitches, not giving up a walk.
In the bottom of the third, the Tigers were able to climb back with a three-run homer against Easterwood. Another run cut the margin in the fifth on an RBI single to left.
Dawson Young came into the game in relief after another pair of runs scored, tying up the game 6-6. Young got out of the inning with a strikeout, one of two recorded in his short outing. He went on to pick up the win after the visiting bats took the lead again in the following inning.
The eighth inning saw a two-out rally and
Rhett Gipe aboard, singling to shallow right field.
Kevin Rolon stepped in for a big two-run slam over left despite being down in the count. Cumberlands took back the score advantage with the pair of runs scored, 8-6.
Young struck out another in the bottom side for a one-two-three inning. In the ninth,
Garrett Vathroder checked in for the final three outs. The closer allowed a pair of hits and a score on a passed ball but fended off the winning runs with back-to-back strikeouts to close the game.
Vathroder collected his fifth save of the season with the one-inning showing on the hill.
Rojas and Leef were the only Patriots to notch multi-hit, both going 2-5 in the first game against Georgetown. Nazario, Encarnacion, and Rolon noted a pair of RBI after bases clearing hits.
Cumberlands returns to action for tomorrow's doubleheader to continue the conference series against Georgetown. First pitch of the two-game set on Saturday is set for 1 PM.
