Leef Takes Program Record in Series Sweep

4/24/2021 8:07:00 PM

Box Score Portsmouth, Ohio – A third-inning homerun secured Bryan Leef a new program record as the Patriots went on to shut out Shawnee State in the series finale, 12-0. The win completes the series sweep after a pair of wins yesterday.

Leef tallied two homeruns this weekend in the final conference series of the season, leading him to tie and break the program record for career homeruns. He has spent the season chasing down former teammate Bryan Benz; in the third game of the series Leef sent his 49th career hit over the fence. He now sits with 20 homers in 2021, matching the count from his first year on campus in 2019.

The Patriots won by run rule for the second time in the series, Thomas Gutierrez shutting out the Bears from the hill in seven innings of action. While holding the opposing bats to three hits, he also delivered a season-high 10 strikeouts.

Leef noted a perfect day at the plate, going 4-4 with two RBI and three runs scored. Candido Encarnacion went 2-3 in the series cap with a pair of RBI as well.

The Bat Pats opened the day with a pair of runs in the first inning. They went on to rally five more in the third, two in the fourth and three in the sixth to take their 12-0 advantage.

Cumberlands recorded several hits for extra bases in addition to Leef's rocket over the fence. Jose Rojas slugged one to right field for two bags.

The Patriots are closing in on the end of the season. They will be traveling to Union this week for a single game against the Bulldogs on Tuesday.
