Bowling Green, KY – For the second straight week,
Pablo Vazquez earns the Mid-South Conference Defensive Player of the Week, announced by the conference on Monday. Vazquez becomes the first defensive player to win the award in back-to-back weeks this yaer.
This week, the Sevilla, Spain native tallied an undefeated week in goal, stopping four shots in the matches. He only allowed two goals, one in each game, but just one from the run of play. In the first game against Georgetown, Vazquez kept UC in the game when they were down 1-0, he made a save from close range. The Patriots then converted a goal seven minutes later which led to the 1-1 tie.
For the second game, when the team took on Shawnee State, Vazquez was crucial for the team's win. He only gave up one goal in the match and it was a penalty kick late in the game. The win marks the sixth victory of the season for the Patriots.
The freshman was also instrumental on the offensive side, recording his second assist of the season. From just outside the 18-yard box Vazquez sailed the ball up to
Shuma Sasaki on the left side who then crossed it to
Rodrigo Riveros for the goal. Vazquez becomes the first goalkeeper under Head Coach
Chris LeFevre to pick up two assists in a season.
This is the third time Vazquez has garnered the award this season, becoming the first in the MSC to do so.
The Patriots will return to the pitch on Wednesday, October 5 when they host UT-Southern. The game is slated for 4:30 p.m. with live video available
