Bowling Green, KY – Rodrigo Riveros led the UC men's soccer team to a victory in their regular season finale, earning him Mid-South Conference Offensive Player of the Week, announced by conference officials on Monday.
Riveros has been key to the Patriots offense all season, but in the 5-0 victory over Pikeville, he shined. The sophomore not only recorded just his second brace of the season, but also tallied an assist which is most points in a single match this season.
The Asuncion, Paraguay native scored both the first and final goals in the game, but his first goal is the goal of the season. The Pats had a free kick in between the corner and the 18-yard box. It was sent in and headed, but the ball hit the post and bounced back out. Riveros had is back to goal with the ball flying towards him. His only option was a bicycle kick, that he timed perfectly to soar into the net for the opening goal.
Riveros' second goal, team's fifth, came in the last 15 minutes of the game, after UC won the ball back. He got the ball at the top of the 18-yard box, cut past a defender and buried the shot to give Cumberlands their most goals in a single game this season.
The assist for Riveros was a well-placed ball on the right side of the field, that
Hrannar Magnusson ran onto and struck the ball well to hit the top netting of the goal.
This marks the first time this season and in his career, that Riveros has taken home a MSC Player of the Week Award.
The performance from Riveros and his teammates pushed the team's record to 9-4-3 for the regular season and 6-2-2 in MSC play. UC earned the #3 seed in the MSC Tournament, giving them a first-round bye and await the winner of Campbellsville vs Pikeville.
