Trio of UC Wrestlers Finish Patriot Duals Unbeaten

Williamsburg, KY – After a strong performance on day one of the Patriot Duals, UC was placed in the top bracket with four of their five opponents in the top-18 of the NAIA. Cumberlands posted a 1-4 record to give them a 5-4 overall record at the Patriot Duals.

UC had both Alexis Medina and Dymond Guilford go undefeated across the two days for a 9-0 record. For Medina, she recorded five techs and one fall and in her tech falls, she blanked her opponents by a score of 51-0. Then Guilford tallied four tech falls, a pair of falls and one decision, with just one of her matches going to the second period.

Competing for UC's second team and also going undefeated was MaQuoia Bernabe. She notched three techs and two falls, never allowing her opponents to score in her tech victories for a 30-0 margin.

CUMBERLANDS DROPS TO BREWTON-PARKER, 18-28
Elizabeth Dosado started the dual off strong. Ranked 10th in the NAIA, Dosado had to face off against #17 Gabriela Garcia. But Garcia was no match for Dosado, not even recording a point for the 10-0 tech fall.

With a forfeit win at 109 for the Barons to give them the 5-4 advantage, Medina stepped up in the 116 bout and earned her first tech fall of the day at 11-0. This allowed UC to regain the lead at 8-6.

Brewton-Parker won the next five matches pushing the score in favor of the Barons 28-9. However, in the final two matches the Patriots finished strong with Guilford picking up the 10-0 tech fall win and Kirby pinning her opponent in just 47 seconds.

CUMBERLANDS FALLS TO INDIANA TECH, 31-15
This time Medina got the first win in the dual for the Pats, once again rattling off a tech fall with just 12 seconds to spare before the first period ended.

UC did not pick up wins in the dual until the final two matches with Guilford and Kirby. Top ranked Guilford at 170, went against #18 Catherine McNulty. Guilford landed two, four-point takedowns all before she pinned McNulty at 1:19.

Kirby followed suit and got a pin of her own. She got a trio of two-point takedowns before implementing her signature arm bar that resulted in a pin at just 34 seconds.
 
CUMBERLANDS IS DEFEATED BY CAMPBELLSVILLE, 27-16
Dosado got back to her winning ways picking up the quick 12-2 tech fall in the first period. Medina followed that up in the 116-matchip with a tech fall of her own, this one at 10-0.

Guilford saw her only match of the tournament go the full six minutes when she faced sixth ranked Liliana Vergara. Guilford started the match with a four-point takedown and never looked back. Se was able to edge out Vergara 7-2 for the decision victory.
 
CUMBERLANDS DEFEATS LIMESTONE, 30-14
For the team's lone win on the day, both Dosado and Medina earned wins by forfeit to give UC the 10-0 lead. At the 130 match, the score was 10-5 and Olivia Hogan stepped to the mat for the Patriots. She was up 5-0 when she flipped her opponent on her back at 2:39 for the fall victory. This pushed the Cumberlands lead to 15-5.

Zoey Smith was also able to get the pin in the 136-weight class. She got hers in the second period at 2:39 after picking up back-to-back four-point takedowns.

This time UC had enough of a lead when Guilford hit the mat with the score at 20-14. Guilford won by a forfeit and then Kirby ended the dual with her third pin of the day at 2:48 for the 30-1 win.

CUMBERLANDS BARELY EDGED BY MISSOURI VALLEY, 27-21
Dosado rattled off a tech fall win to begin the dual, going up 10-0. She earned all ten points just over the first two minutes of the match.

In the 116-match with the Vikings up 5-4, third ranked Medina wrestled 20th ranked Hailey Holland. The match was evenly contested and was tied up at 8-8, but then Medina got a two-point takedown that flipped Holland on her back for the pin at 5:25.

Hogan earned her second win of the day with her second pin. She earned the four point takedown in the first 30 seconds of the match and then got her opponent on her back at 1:02 for the fall.

In the 170-bout the dual was close at 24-15. Guilford kept her trend of quick matches, pinning her opponent at 56 seconds to make the score 24-20.

Kirby was up in the 191-weight class but had the task of taking on the #1 ranked wrestler of Kelani Corbett. Kirby, ranked fourth went toe-to-toe with Corbett. The score was tied 2-2 going into the second period. Corbett got two pushouts to go up 4-2 and then Kirby hit a four-point takedown to take the 6-4 lead. However, in the last 26 seconds Corbett earned three points to win 7-6 and take the dual 27-21.

On Cumberlands second team, both Bernabe and Chamira Cooper got wins against Liberty on the mat. Bernabe earned a 10-0 tech fall and Cooper got a pin at 2:25.

The Patriots will return to the mats next weekend when they head to Marietta, GA for their first Mid-South Conference dual of the season. They will take on #5 Life on Friday, December 9 at 3 PM ET.
