Williamsburg, KY – The 11
th-ranked Patriots fall in both games against the Saint Francis, after not being able to close out game one losing 14-11 and falling short in game two 7-2 Saturday at Doyle Buhl Stadium. After the game UC moves to 7-3 on the season.
In a high scoring first game,
Thomas Gutierrez pitched 5.2 innings giving up six hits, one earned run, two walks, and eight strikeouts.
Chuck Bronson pitched 1.0 innings giving up seven hits, no earned runs or walks, and one strikeout. UC would get home runs from
Sujel Arias,
Carlos Muniz, and
Daniel Maldonado.
Candido Encarnacion went 2-3 with an RBI and a double.
Arias blasted a two-run homer over left center to give UC the 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third. Muniz would then step to the plate and hit a solo homer to extend the lead to 4-1.
In the next at bat for the Patriots,
Ryan Shavers scored on a wild pitch. Followed by a
Raphy Almanzar single up the middle bringing two Pats home for the 7-1 lead heading into the fifth.
In the fifth, Maldonado hit a three-run bomb over the left field fence to give the Pats a 10-1 lead. The Cougars closed the gap to 10-5 in the top of the sixth. UC added one more run in the bottom of that inning off a
Candido Encarnacion RBI single. Saint Francis responded with eight runs in the seventh to take the lead and win the game.
In game two
Walter Hernandez got the start and pitched 3.1 innings allowing three hits, two runs, six walks, and seven strikeouts.
Corey Linz,
Caleb Plummer, and
Jared Shelton would all get appearances. Linz pitched 1.0 innings giving up two hits, three runs, two walks with two strikeouts, while Plummer pitched 1.2 innings allowing two hits, two runs, three walks and three strikeouts. Shelton pitched 1.0 innings not allowing a hit, run or walk, with a strikeout.
At the plate, Muniz stayed hot going 2-3 with a double and a walk as
Seth Benner got his first start and notched a double.
In this game the Pats could not get their offense on track, only coming away with two runs. In the fourth,
Ryan Shavers singled to left field to bring Muniz home after his double. Then in the sixth, Benner recorded his double to bring home a run cutting the deficit to 5-2.
Cumberlands will hit the road heading south to take on Point University in West Point, GA for a four-game series starting Friday Feb 18 at 1pm.
