Patriots Open the Freed-Hardeman Series With a Win

Williamsburg, KY – Another hot day from Charlie Muniz propels the 11th ranked Pats over the Lions in the series opener. After two homeruns today, Muniz becomes the first Patriot to hit double digit homeruns this season. Cumberlands never trailed as they won 11-8, and advances to 13-5 on the season.

Thomas Gutierrez got the start and pitched 5.2 innings, giving up nine hits, for seven runs, with two walks and three strikeouts. Walter Hernandez came in for relief and got the win as he pitched 3.0 innings. He only allowed five hits, one run, no walks, and four strikeouts.  Chipper Korbacher came in with two outs in the top of the ninth and got his second save of the season.

Muniz led the way for the Pats, as he went a perfect 5-5 with two homers, a double, and three RBIs. Candido Encarnacion went 2-4, and a walk. While Seth Benner went 2-3 with a double and two RBIs.

UC took an early 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, as Raphy Almanzar got it started with a single up the left side. Muniz then stepped up and single up the middle. Sujel Arias came up next and hit an RBI single up the middle. Two batters later Ray Villanueva reached on first on an error and would get an RBI out of it as well. Seth Benner followed with a two RBI single up the middle for the 4-0 lead.

After the Lions tied the game in the top of the second, UC regained the lead as Muniz hit his first homer of the day for the 5-4 lead.

In the next at bat, Encarnacion singled up the middle, followed by a walk from Villanueva. Three batters later, Ernies Lozada got an RBI single to left field, for the 6-5 lead.  

After a three up three down top of the fourth, Muniz would notch a one out home run over the left field fence for the 7-5 lead.

After a few scoreless innings, Freed-Hardeman tied the game at 7-7 in the top of the sixth. Followed by a couple more scoreless innings. UC regained the lead as they tallied four runs in the bottom of the eighth. With one out Sean Cheely laid a bunt down the third base line and beat out the throw. Almanzar then got walked. Muniz then stepped to the plate and got an RBI single down the left field line. After a walk by Arias, Villanueva hit a two RBI single up the middle. Benner would then get walked, and Luis Alvarez stole home for the 11-7 lead.

The Lions tried to make a run in the top of the ninth but could only put in one run for the 11-8 Patriots win.

UC looks to complete the series sweep tomorrow against RV Freed-Hardeman. Action will start a noon for the doubleheader.
