Williamsburg, KY– Patriots fell to Shawnee State in game one 3-2, then a big fourth inning in game two gave them the 13-4 win. With that win the Pats won the series 2-1 and moved their record to 25-14 for the season.
Game Two
Thomas Gutierrez got the nod to start game two and pitched 8.0 innings, allowing only four runs on seven hits, with four walks and 10 strikeouts. Gutierrez was able to retire the first six of the eight batters, while getting his sixth win of the season.
Offensively,
Sujel Arias went 3-4 at the plate with three RBIs. Freshman
Clay Shelton went 2-3 with a homerun and three RBIs, while
Seth Benner went 2-4 with a double and two RBIs.
The Patriots got on the board first as they scored two runs in the bottom of the third.
Luis Alvarez got walked to leadoff the half inning. He would advance to second on a sacrifice bunt by Benner, then advanced to third on a groundout. Patriots then got two straight walks to fill the bases.
Sujel Arias stepped up and notched a two RBI single up the middle for the 2-0 lead.
The Bears stormed back scoring four runs in the top of the fourth to take the lead. The Patriots rallied to score seven runs in the bottom of the fourth. Benner led off and got walked. Two batters later Alvarez got walked. Then freshman
Clay Shelton stepped up and hit his first collegiate homerun, as UC were up 5-4. After a pitching change and a groundout,
Raphy Almanzar doubled down the left field line, and Muniz followed by getting hit by a pitch. Arias would then come up with an RBI single up the middle for the 6-4 lead.
Ray Villanueva came up and notched a single to right field for an RBI, then advanced to second on an error. Benner then got his second at bat of the inning, and singled through the left side for two RBIs and UC expanded their lead to 9-4.
The Pats added a few more runs in the bottom of the fifth, as Shelton singled through the left side to open the inning. After Perez came into courtesy run, he advanced to second on a fly out, then advanced to third on a wild pitch as Almanzar got walked. Muniz got his first hit of the game as he got a 2 RBI single to left field, then advanced to second on an error. That gave UC the 11-4 lead.
A few innings later in the bottom of the eighth, the Patriots added two more runs to the lead. With one out, Arias singled to right field and
Ryan Shavers came into pinch run. Villanueva would then double to left center, and Shavers advanced to third. Two batters later
Candido Encarnacion notched a two RBIs with a single through the left side for the 13-4 lead. UC held the Bears scoreless in the ninth and won the game 13-4.
Game One
Braxton Cottongame pitched a complete 7.0 inning game scattering eight hits for three runs, one walk, and seven strikeouts. He would get credited for the loss as he moves to 5-3 on the season.
Offensively, the freshman duo
Seth Benner and
Charlie Muniz went 2-3 at the plate. Benner came away with a triple and a double, while Muniz had a homerun.
In this low scoring game, UC got on the board first in the bottom of the second. Benner tripled to right field, then two batters later
Luis Alvarez singled towards third base allowing Benner to come home for the 1-0 lead.
In the Patriots next at bat, UC added one run to the lead. After a leadoff groundout, Muniz hit his 14
th homerun of the season for the 2-0 lead.
The Bears came away with three runs over the next few innings to take the lead. They were able to hang on to that lead to win the game, 3-2.
Cumberlands returns to action Tuesday April 12 as they take on Union for a double header. First game is set to start at 2 pm.
