Patriots Showcase Their Offense As They Score 22 Runs To Sweep The Bulldogs

Williamsburg, KY– Patriots scored 22 runs in two games to sweep Union on Tuesday afternoon. UC won the first game 14-1, behind a 10 strikeout game by Walter Hernandez. Then in game two, Gabriel Ramos pitched his first complete game shutout in a 8-0 win. This moves the Pats record to 27-14.

Game One

Hernandez got the start and win as he pitched 5.2 innings allowing only two hits for one run, four walks and 10 strikeouts. Caleb Plummer came in relief and pitched 1.1 innings giving up one hit, no runs or walks, and two strikeouts.

Offensively, the reigning MSC Player of the Week Seth Benner went 4-4 with a triple, a double, and two RBIs. Ray Villanueva also had a great day as he was a double away from a cycle, as he went 3-4 with a homerun, a triple, and a single for three RBIs.

After a slow start to the game, UC was able to get a run across in the top of the second and never looked back. It started with a one out triple to right center by Benner, Candido Encarnacion followed with an RBI single toward the shortstop for the 1-0 lead.

In the third, Patriots added four more runs to the lead, starting with one out, Sujel Arias reached on a fielder's choice. Villanueva would notch an RBI triple to right field allowing Arias to score on the play for the 2-0 lead. A couple pitches later, Benner batted in Villanueva with a single up the middle. Encarnacion then singled up the middle on a full count, and Benner advanced to second. Andres Rolon then got a double of his own to left center, getting two RBIs in the process, for the 5-0 lead.

Later in the fifth, Villanueva notched his fourth homerun of the season to expand the lead to 6-0.  The Bulldogs answered with a run of their own in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 6-1.

The Pats responded with eight runs in the bottom half of that inning to go ahead 14-1. Sean Cheely led off by getting walked, then stole second and advanced to third on a bad throw from the catcher. Raphy Almanzar then got walked and went to second after a failed pickoff attempt by the pitcher. Cheely went on to scored on the play. Charlie Muniz got the first hit in this at bat for the Pats, as he doubled to center field for an RBI and the 8-1 lead. Kevin Perez came into courtesy run, and advanced to third on a wild pitch, while Arias got walked. A few pitches later, Villanueva reached on a fielder's choice, and Perez went home. Daniel Maldonaldo came in and pinch ran and advanced to second on a wild pitch. The next pitch, Benner double to left field for an RBI and a 10-1 lead. Ernies Lozada came into pinch hit and got walked, Shane Jones also came into pinch hit as he got an RBI double down the left field line. Ryan Shavers also got a pinch-hit opportunity and notched an RBI as he grounded out. Perez then stepped to the plate and got hit by a pitch, Frank Garcia followed with a single towards third base to fill the bases. With the bases loaded, Rhett Gipe got hit by a pitch for an RBI and the 13-1 lead. Clay Shelton followed by reaching the on an error, and Perez came home to score the final run of the game, as Plummer notched a groundout and back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.

Game Two

Ramos pitched 7.0 inning complete game only giving up two hits with eight strikeouts in 81 pitches, earning him his first win of the season. Offensively, Luis Alvarez went 2-3 with two singles, and Muniz went 1-2 with a double.

This game saw UC score eight runs on just six hits, as Cheely led off with a walk, and a steal of second two pitches later. He would go to third on a tag and go after Almanzar flew out. Muniz then hit a sacrifice fly for an RBI and the 1-0 lead.

After a three up three down inning, UC added three runs to the lead. With one out, Benner reached on an error, and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Encarnacion then got walked and both him and Benner advanced on a wild pitch. Shelton would then hit a sacrifice fly to score a run. Alvarez followed with a single through the right side for an RBI and the 3-0 lead. After Alvarez advanced on a balk and went to third on a wild pitch, Cheely would get walked. A few pitches later, Cheely stole second and Alvarez went home on the throw for the 4-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third UC was able to add two more runs to their lead, as Muniz doubled to lead off the inning. Villanueva then reached on an error and Muniz went home for the 5-0 lead. After back-to-back walks to fill the bases, all three runners advanced on a wild pitch, which scored a run.

After some scoreless innings, the Pats added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Cheely reached on an error and went to second on the bad throw. He would then steal third in the next few pitches. In another fly out, Cheely would tag and score. Muniz then stepped to the plate and got hit on the first pitch. Arias followed with a single to center field, allowing Muniz to round the bases for the 8-0 score.

Cumberlands hits the road for a single game tomorrow April 13th at Milligan. The game is set to start at 2 pm.
