A Big Sixth Inning Lifted Patriots Past The Buffaloes

Milligan, TN– UC puts up 10 runs in the sixth to gets past Milligan for the second time this season, as they won the game 17-8 on Wednesday evening. Sean Cheely and Raphy Almanzar had back-to-back homeruns that inning as well. This win puts the Pats record at 28-14, headed into this weekend.

Garrett DeClue started and pitched 6.2 innings allowing five hits and five runs, but only four were earned. He also came away with seven strikeouts on his way to a win. Jake Kampen came in relief and pitched 2.1 innings giving up six hits for three runs with three strikeouts.

Offensively, Cheely led the way going 3-5 for two homers, seven RBIs, and two stolen bases. Three other Patriots hit homeruns on the day, Almanzar, Seth Benner, and Daniel Maldonado.

After a slow start to the game, Cumberlands got on the board first scoring four runs in the top of the fourth. Ray Villanueva led off with a single to right field and stole second within the next few pitches, before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Candido Encarnacion followed with a single up the middle to bring home the first run of the game. From there, Luis Alvarez put down a bunt for a single. Then with two on base Sean Cheely hit a homerun to right field for the 4-0 lead.

After another scoreless inning, UC put up 10 more runs in the sixth to expand on their lead. Alvarez singled to center field and then stole second on the next pitch to lead off the inning. Cheely followed by reaching first on a fielding error, as Alvarez went to third. Cheely then stole second and Almanzar hit a sacrifice fly to advance both runners. A few plays later, Cheely scored on an error. Charlie Muniz got walked and Kevin Perez came into courtesy run. Sujel Arias was then able to reach on an error and Perez would advance to third. Villanueva came up and hit an RBI double to left center for the 7-0 lead. Seth Benner then got walked to fill the bases. Then back-to-back walks scored two runs for the Pats pushing the lead to 9-0. Cheely then hit his second homer of the day to clear the bases and give the Patriots the 13-0 lead. Almanzar then came to the plate and hit his third homerun of the season for the 14-0 lead.

The Buffaloes answered with two runs in the bottom half of the innings before DeClue ended the run with his seventh strikeout of the day. Then Milligan was able to cut the lead down to nine after scoring three runs in the seventh.

UC responded with a three run ninth inning to push the lead back up to double-digits. Benner notched his first homer of the day as he led off with a solo shot to left field. Encarnacion reached on an error and Daniel Maldonado followed with a two-run shot over the left center fence for the 17-5 lead. The Buffaloes were able to score three final runs before the game ended 17-8.

Cumberlands is back on the road for this weekend's MSC series against Pikeville. Action is set to start on Friday April 15 at 3 pm in Pikeville.
