Seven Homeruns Get The Patriots Their Ninth Straight Win

Pippa Passes, KY– UC had three players notch two homerun day as the Patriots took down the Eagles 15-3 on Wednesday evening. Ray Villanueva, Sujel Arias, and Seth Benner all had two homers to help move the record to 35-12 on the season.

Offensively, Arias, Villanueva, and Benner had two hits each with both being homeruns. Clay Shelton went 1-2 and his lone hit was a homer.

Defensively, Walter Hernandez got the start and the win as he pitched 7.0 innings, allowing six hits for three runs, four walks and five strikeouts. Hernandez now has a 5-1 record on the year. Jake Kampen came in relief and pitched 1.0 innings allowing only one hit and a strikeout.

The Patriots found themselves down 1-0 at the top of the third, as Candido Encarnacion singled to right field to lead off the inning.  Luis Alvarez laid down a bunt for an RBI single to tie the game, then Shelton followed with a bunt for an RBI single to take the 2-0 lead. From this point on UC never trailed again.

In their next at-bat, Benner got the one out walk, and Encarnacion doubled to center field. Benner would score on a wild pitch for the 3-1 lead. Two batters later, Shelton got hit by a pitch then Cheely got an RBI single. After Kevin Perez came into courtesy run both him and Cheely stole a base. Raphy Almanzar followed with an RBI single as Perez scored for the 5-1 lead.

In the top of the fifth, the Pats got back-to-back homers by Arias and Villanueva to take the 7-1 lead.

Later in the sixth inning, Almanzar led off with a single to center field. Charlie Muniz followed with a single up the middle. Then Arias stepped up and hit a three-run homer for his second on the day as the Patriots went up 10-1. Two batters later, Benner hit his first homerun of the day over center field for the 11-1 lead.

Then in the top of the seventh inning, UC added one more run as Shelton hit a lead off home run to take the 12-1 lead. In the bottom half of the inning the Eagles scored two runs to cut the lead down to 12-3.

UC answered in the top of the eighth with three more runs. Arias got walked to start the inning. Next Villanueva stepped up and hit his second homerun of the day, then Benner followed with a homer of his own for the 15-3 lead. Cumberlands would hold Alice Lloyd scoreless to end the game due to a run rule.

Cumberlands return home for the final home series of the season as they take on RV Georgetown in a three game MSC series. The first game is set to start Friday April 22 at 3 pm.
