The Patriots Are Headed Back To Bowling Green

Williamsburg, KY- UC gets a late push in the seventh to get the sweep in the MSC Opening Round over UT Southern 8-5 on Saturday afternoon. Charlie Muniz hit a two-run homer in the seventh to propel the Pats to 40-13 on the season.

Muniz came up big late with the homerun and two RBIs. Sujel Arias had another good game as he went 2-4. Braxton Cottongame got the start and pitched 5.0 innings scattering three runs over nine hits, only one was earned. He also came away with four strikeouts. Jake Kmiecik came in relief and got the win as he pitched 4.0 innings allowing two runs on four hits, with a walk and two strikeouts.

UC got on the board early as Sean Cheely reached first on an error, then stole second two pitches later. Raphy Almanzar reached first on an error and Cheely went to third on a wild pitch. Cheely went home as Muniz grounded into a double play to take the 1-0 lead.

The Patriots added two more runs in their next at bat to go up 3-0. Seth Benner and Candido Encarnacion notched back-to-back walks to lead off the inning. Andres Rolon singled through the right side to load the bases. Then a sacrifice fly from Luis Alvarez scored a run, and Cheely followed with another sacrifice fly to get the lead to 3-0.

The Firehawks responded with two runs in the third then one more in the fourth to tie the game at 3-3. UC regained the lead in the fifth after scoring two runs. Luis Alvarez led off by getting walked. Then Cheely reached first on another error. Almanzar followed with a fielder's choice and advanced to third on an error, while Cheely came home to score. Then Almanzar came home to score on a wild pitch for the 5-3 lead.

UT Southern tie the game back up in the sixth before the Pats scored the final three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Rolon got walked and a sacrifice bunt from Alvarez moved Rolon to second. Rolon advanced to third on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly from Cheely gave UC the 6-5 lead. Almanzar then got walked. After a pitching change, Muniz hit his 17th homerun of the season, this time over the left field fence to make it 8-5.

The Firehawks threatened in both the eighth and ninth innings and a double play and some ground outs got Cumberlands the 8-5 win

Cumberlands is headed to Bowling Green to play on Friday at 12:30, they will play the winner of the Georgetown and Cumberland game on Thursday.
