Williamsburg, KY – A lone Patriot was among the 13-person team that represent District Two of the NAIA for the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team that was announced by CoSIDA officials Thursday afternoon. Sean Cheely is the solitary Patriot that earned this distinction this year.
Cheely has been the Patriots leadoff centerfielder all year and earned first team all-conference and was gold glove winner. The Austell, GA native has maintained a 4.0 GPA for the year and made the Dean's List in the fall. Cheely batted .324 for the year while leading the team and the Mid-South in stolen bases with 42. That mark also but him at fifth in the NAIA and second in the Pats record book for stole bases in a season. Along with leading the way on the base pass, Cheely has recorded 72 hits with 14 being doubles, four triples, eight homeruns, and a total of 45 RBIs. He also got it done defensively, as he posted a 1.000 fielding percentage with 113 putouts and two assists while making zero errors the whole season.
Cumberlands posted a 43-14 record this season and topped the season off with their second straight MSC Conference Title for the first time in program history. By winning the conference title, UC earned an automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament, for the fourth time in five years.
For Cheely, earning CoSIDA Academic All-District honors makes him eligible to earn Academic All-American First-team honors as all Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot. First- and second-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in early June.
The 2021-22 Academic All-District Baseball Teams, selected by CoSIDA, recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The CoSIDA Academic All-America program separately recognizes baseball honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
