Bowling Green, KY – After outscoring their opponents 7-1 over the weekend, UC men's soccer earned two Mid-South Conference Player of the Week Awards. On the offensive side
Stephen Appiah took home the honor while
Pablo Vazquez won the award for the defensive side. This marks the first time for either student-athlete that they have won the accolade.
Of the seven goals Cumberlands tallied, Appiah was a part of five of them with four goals and an assist. He notched braces in both games, marking the first time in his career he posted multi-goal games in bac to back contests. Impressively, last season Appiah was the second leading goal scorer on UC's team with a total of six and is just two away from that mark just five games into the 2022 season.
In Vazquez's first two games as a Patriot, he allowed just one goal against while racking up five saves. His .500 goals against average is second in the MSC this season and his .833 save percentage is third best. Vazquez is just the second goalkeeper in the
Chris LeFevre era to pick up a shutout in his debut, joining teammate
Ingmar Struck.
The team's first game of the week was against previously unbeaten West Virginia Tech and both Appiah with Vazquez had their names all over the scoresheet. In the team's 3-0 victory, Appiah netted the final two goals in the game, one with his head and the other off a breakaway that Vazquez facilitated. Vazquez hit a well struck ball up the field right to the on running Appiah who had to just beat the keeper and bury the ball.
For the squad's 4-1 victory over #13 Rio Grande, Appiah once again netted two goals, but this time also adding an assist. Vazquez held the Red Storm to just one goal, and impressive feat since they were averaging 5.67 goals per game entering the match. Appiah scored the opening goal and then assisted on the game winning goal unselfishly passing to a wide-open teammate to give UC the lead
Not only are the Patriots the first team in the MSC to sweep the awards this season, but it marks the first time UC has swept since 2019 when Marvin va der Made and Keshell Alexander Jr. swept the MSC weekly awards to open the season.
Cumberlands looks to carry their momentum into their first home game of the season on Saturday, September 10
th when they host #22 Lyon College. The kick-off will be at 7PM ET at the UC Soccer Complex.
