Louisville, KY – The Patriots finished up at the NWCA Duals, placing 11
th. On day two, the team went 1-2 for a 2-3 record over the weekend. For the duals today, #8 UC lost 25-18 to #7 Indiana Tech, dropped the dual to #10 Central Methodist 28-18 and then battled back in their final dual to beat #18 Baker, 28-18.
Across the tournament, the Patriots had five wrestlers keep a perfect record.
Dymond Guilford led the way going 4-0 with all four coming from tech falls. Amongst all NAIA wrestlers at the tournament Guilford had the most tech falls in the least amount of time, only spending five minutes on the mats.
Angelina Castaneda also went 4-0, notching two tech falls and two forfeit wins.
MaQuoia Bernabe went 3-0 with a fall, decision and forfeit win in the 191-weight class.
Jesse Kirby also was undefeated in the 191-weight class, with two wins, one from a fall and forfeit.
Chamira Cooper earned a win yesterday from a 13-3 tech fall victory.
CUMBERLANDS DEFEATS BAKER, 28-18
#15 Castaneda quickly took over the opening match against #20 Kylie Hernandez. Cataneda utilized a pair of four-point takedowns and one two-point takedown to get the 10-0 tech fall. All of which happened before the first period ended.
In the 109 bout,
Elizabeth Dosado also blanked her opponent. She scored two points in the first period and then got another two-point takedown in the second. Then Dosado earned a four-point throw that put her opponent on her back for the fall at 4:13 to put UC up 9-0.
Fourth ranked
Aliyah Yates faced off against 17
th ranked Abbie Jones in the 136-weight class with the Patriots down 13-9. Yates kept the trend going of keeping her opponent scoreless, not giving up a point to Jones. Yates started with a two-point takedown 10 seconds into the match then had a four-point takedown that put Jones on her back for a fall at 1:10. The win gave UC the 14-13 advantage.
After a loss for UC and a forfeit win at 155 for
Leah Brown the score was 19-18 heading into the 170 match. Guilford ranked #1 in the 170-weight class took on second ranked Kaylynn Albrecht (155). Guilford dominated the match with five, two-point takedowns all in the first period for the 10-0 tech fall. It was the longest match for Guilford, lasting 2:32.
Bernabe picked up the forfeit win in the 191-match up to seal the victory for UC at 28-18.
INDIANA TECH DEFEATS CUMBERLANDS, 25-18
Dosado went down 2-0 early in the 101 matchup, but had an immediate response to tie it up. Then Dosado got two more points to go ahead, this lead she kept for the rest of the match. Dosado started the second period with three points to go up 7-2. Her opponent was resilient in the match battling back to make the score 7-5 in favor of Dosado. With under a minute remaining Dosado earned a point, before a two-point takedown from her opponent, securing the 8-7 decision win.
With a forfeit win at 136, UC was down 8-24 heading into the 155 bout.
Leah Brown stepped up for UC against #15 Grace Doering. Brown got out to a lead less than a minute into the match, with a two-point takedown. Brown and Doering both scored two points to make it 4-2 in favor of Brown after the first period. Brown once again got an early two-point takedown and only gave up two points to Doering for the 6-4 decision win.
The team score was at 25-11 and out of reach for UC, but Brown started a three-match win streak for the Patriots to finish it out. Guilford got a quick two-point takedown to start the match. Then Guilford had a four-point throw, picking her opponent off the ground to go up 6-0. Guilford then added two more takedowns for the 10-0 tech fall win at just 57 seconds.
Bernabe finished off the dual on a high point for the Patriots. She did not concede a point against #15 Riley Dempewolf. Bernabe, ranked #9, earned three points in the first period, two from a takedown and one from a pushout. With the 3-0 lead, Bernabe added one more point in the second period for the 4-0 decision win.
CUMBERLANDS LOSES TO CENTRAL METHODIST, 28-18
UC started off with a forfeit win at the 101-weight class to go up 5-0. Then, fifth ranked Dosado from the 101-weight class wrestled up against 15
th ranked Victoria Nunez. The contest went back and forth with the two trading two-point takedowns three times in the first period. But Dosado was able to earn back-to-back takedowns to have the 8-6 lead heading into period #2. Dosado then started the period with a two-point takedown to make it six straight points. Nunez earned four more points, with Dosado got one more takedown for the 12-10 Dosado victory.
The team score was 9-28 for the final two matches in favor of the Eagles. Guilford held strong to her quick attacks, picking up a point in the first 31 seconds. Guilford then got a takedown that led to four leg laces for a 11-0 tech fall win.
For the 191 bout, Bernabe once again blanked her opponent, this time with a pair of four-point takedowns. Bernabe used her final takedown to put her opponent on her back and earn the only fall in the dual for Cumberlands at 2:39.
Next, the Patriots will travel to Sylvania, OH for a Mid-South Conference tri-dual featuring (RV) Lourdes and (RV) Siena Heights. It will take place Friday, January, 13 with the first dual at 6PM ET.
