Big Comeback Effort Gives The Patriots The Series Sweep

Williamsburg, KY- The 12th ranked Patriots made an eight-run comeback to win todays game 18-11. UC was able to get their first MSC sweep of the season behind a seven-homerun day to advance to 24-4 on the year.

Six Patriots hit seven homers, led by Ryan Shavers going 4-4 with two homeruns and six RBIs. Raphy Almanzar went 3-4 with a homerun and double for two RBIs, while Josh Simon went 4-5 with a homer and double for four RBIs. Charlie Muniz also had a good day going 2-4 with a homerun and double while adding four RBIs. Evan St Claire went 2-5 and both hits were extra base hits. One was a homerun and the other was a double. Sujel Arias also added a homerun. Jake Kmiecik got the start today as he pitched 3.2 innings with four strikeouts. Joe Bertram came in relief and picked up the win as he threw 3.0 innings allowing two hits with no runs, two walks and three strikeouts. Jared Shelton picked up his first save of the season, as he pitched 2.0 innings not allowing a hit or a run with three strikeouts.

UC hit the board first in their first at-bat. With two outs, Arias hit a solo shot over the left field fence to take the 1-0 lead. In the Pats next at-bat, they put up two runs. St Claire led off with a first pitch bomb to right field for the 2-0 lead. Ben Snapp got walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch, then third on a ground out. An RBI single from Shavers gave the Patriots the 3-0 lead.

The Wildcats answered with two runs in the third, and nine in the fourth to take an 11-3 lead. From there, UC chipped away at the lead one inning at a time. In the bottom of the fourth with one out, Snapp got walked and went to third on a single from Simon. Shavers followed with an RBI single to left field. Two batters later, Almanzar got walked to fill the bases, then a Muniz single to left field scored two runs to make it an 11-6 game.

In the next UC at bat, they added two more runs to cut the lead down to three. With two outs, Snapp singled to left field, and Simon followed with a bomb to right field to make it an 11-8 game.

After a couple scoreless innings, Cumberlands regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh. St Claire doubled to right center to lead off the inning. Two batters later, Simon notched an RBI as he singled through the right side. Shavers followed with a game tying two run homerun to left center. Patriots regained the lead after Caden Petrey singled to left field, then advanced to third on a walk and wild pitch. Petrey scored on an RBI sacrifice fly from Muniz for the 12-11 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Patriots bats got going as they hit two two-run homers to break the game open. Max Harper reached first on an error to lead off the inning. Then advanced to third on back-to-back outs. A Simon double to left center scored Harper for the 13-11 lead. Shavers stepped in the box and notched his forth hit and second two run homer of the day to left center for the 15-11 lead. Petrey followed with a single through the left side, then lead off man Almanzar hit a two-run shot straight down the left field line for the 17-11 lead. Muniz followed with the seventh homerun of the day, to make it an 18-11 game.

Patriots got the job done in the top of the ninth with a three up three down inning to win the game and sweep the series. The Patriots will return to the diamond on Tuesday March 21st to take on Milligan at 3 pm.
