Cumberlands Takes The Series Against Georgetown

Williamsburg, KY- 11th ranked Cumberlands win the series as they split the day. The Patriots won the first game 8-3, then dropped the second game 15-14. UC moves to 25-5 on the season.

Game One

In a game that had a two-hour delay after the first inning, Garrett DeClue got the start and the win as he pitched 4.1 innings. He allowed four hits for three runs with six strikeouts. Jared Shelton came in relief and pitched 1.0 innings notching two strikeouts. Cesar Avila also came in relief and got his fifth save of the season. He pitched 1.2 innings and notched two strikeouts. At the plate, Ryan Shavers went 2-2, with both hits being a homerun for 3 RBIs. Caden Petrey also had a good game as he went 2-3 with a triple.

The Tigers scored 2-0 after scoring a run in the second and third innings. After the delay, the Pats went up 5-2 after scoring five in the bottom half of the third. Josh Simon led off the inning with a single to right field. Shavers then hit his first home run of the game to tie the game at 2-2. Petrey followed with a single to left field. Two batters later, Charlie Muniz got walked. Sujel Arias notched a single to fill the bases. Two batters later, Evan St Claire got walked for an RBI to take the 3-2 lead. Next, Ben Snapp reached on an error, and that error allowed two runs to score for the 5-2 lead.

After holding Georgetown scoreless in the fourth, UC added another run to their lead. Shavers led off with a solo bomb over the left-center fence for the 6-2 lead.

The Tigers were able to score a run in the top of the fifth before Cumberlands scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. The inning started with a Snapp double down the right-field line. After a double play, Shavers got hit by a pitch, then an RBI triple from Petrey gave UC the 7-3 lead. Next Raphy Almanzar reached on an error, allowing Petrey to score. UC would get the final three outs to win the game and the series.  

Game Two

Ten of the Pats 19 hits were for extra bases, as Arias led the way going 5-6 with three doubles and a homerun for seven RBIs. Josh Simon went 3-4 with a solo home run, while Snapp added a three-run homer as well. St Claire went 2-5, with both hits being doubles. Almanzar and Harper also added a double each.

UC got on the board first as Almanzar singled up the middle. Arias followed with his first double of the game, and Almanzar scored on a wild pitch a few pitches later.

The Tigers scored five runs in the second to take the 6-1 lead. The Pats responded in the third with eight runs to regain the lead. Almanzar notched a single to start the at-bat. Arias then hit a bomb over the left field fence to make it 6-3. Harper then notched a double to right center. Two batters later, St Claire doubled down the left field line. With two in scoring position, Snapp homered to left center to tie the game at 6-6. Simon would then get walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Josiah Santiago hit an RBI single two batters later to take the 7-6 lead. Almanzar followed with a double to left field, and Arias got a two-RBI double for the 9-6 lead.

Georgetown scored one run in each of the fourth and fifth innings before UC scored a run in the bottom of the fifth. Santiago got walked to start the inning; then he stole second a few pitches later. A few plays later, after reaching third, he scored on an RBI single from Harper for the 10-8 lead.

The Tigers regained the lead in the sixth as they scored five runs. UC answered with three runs to tie the game. Simon hit a ball clear over the scoreboard in right field with one out. Petrey followed with a single down the left-field line. A few plays later, Almanzar got walked. With two on, Arias stepped to the plate and notched a two-RBI double to tie the game at 13-13.

From there, Georgetown scored two runs while the Pats only scored one, and Georgetown held on to win the game 15-14.

The Patriots will head down to Athens, TN, on Tuesday, March 28th for a game against Tennessee Wesleyan. Then they return home for the weekend series against Wilberforce.
