Cumberlands Open The Weekend With A Victory Over The Tigers

Williamsburg, KY- Four homeruns by the 15th ranked Patriots, led to an 11-4 win over the Tigers in conference home opener. UC took the 1-0 series lead.

Hunter Rigsby got the start on the mound and pitched 5.0 innings to get his first win of the season. He tallied six strikeouts while allowing five hits and one earned run. Dustin Sprong came into close and picked up a save as he pitched 4.0 innings. He only allowed two hits for one run and notched five strikeouts.

At the plate, Charlie Muniz led the way as he went 3-4 with two doubles and a homerun, for three RBIs. Raphy Almanzar went 2-2 with a homerun and two RBIs. Sujel Arias and Caden Petrey both added homeruns as well.

In the Patriots first at bat, Almanzar led off with a homerun over left field to take the 1-0 lead. After a three up three down inning, UC added two more runs to their lead. Ryan Shavers ledoff the inning by getting walked, then Evan St Claire doubled to left center. With two runners in scoring position, Almanzar singled to left field for an RBI. Next, Muniz doubled through the left side for an RBI and the 3-0 lead.

Campbellsville was able to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the fourth, and Cumberlands responded with two runs in the fifth to regain the lead. Petrey started the inning with a single to left field. He would get himself into scoring position as he went to second on an error and third on a wild pitch. Luis Alvarez got an RBI sacrifice fly to take the lead. Two batters later, Arias muscled one over the left field fence for the 5-3 lead.

The Tigers were able to score a run in the sixth, before UC tallied four in their next at bat. Josh Simon led off the inning with a single to center field. Two batters later, St Claire put runners on the corners with a single to right field. Josiah Santiago followed with an RBI single through the right side. Next in the batters box was Petrey, and he hit a three run homer to center field for the 9-4 lead.

Later in the eighth, the Pats added two more runs, as Santiago led off with a single and went to second on a balk. Two batters later, Muniz hit a no doubter over the left field wall to take the 11-4 lead. From there, UC was able to hold on to their lead to get their 14 victory of the season. They will return to action tomorrow to finish out the conference series with a doubleheader. The first pitch is set to be at 1 pm.
