Midway, KY- The ninth-ranked Patriots notched nine doubles on their way to take down the Eagles of Midway 20-9 and get their ninth straight win. Cumberlands improved to 34-5 on the season.
Jake Kmiecik got the start and the win as he pitched 5.0 innings, only allowing seven hits for four runs, none earned, with a walk and two strikeouts.
Caleb Plummer came in relief and pitched 1.0 innings notching two strikeouts. Zach Carlson came in and closed and pitched 1.1 innings, and came away with a strikeout.
The Pats were led by
Raphy Almanzar, who went 4-5 with a home run and three RBIs.
Evan St Claire went 2-3 with a homer and four RBIs.
Charlie Muniz went 3-6, with all three hits being doubles.
Sujel Arias went 2-4 with two doubles and two RBIs.
UC jumped out to a 4-0 lead as Almanzar opened the game with a lead-off homer to left field for the 1-0 lead. Muniz followed with a double before
Sujel Arias got walked. Harper reached on a fielder's choice; then St Claire got walked to fill the bases. A sacrifice fly from
Ben Snapp gave the Pats a 2-0 lead. Next,
Josh Simon notched an RBI single through the right side for the 3-0 lead.
Ryan Shavers followed with an RBI double to take the 4-0 lead.
In the next Patriots at-bat, Muniz doubled down the third base line. Courtesy runner
Kevin Perez would advance to third before Harper got a single up the middle for an RBI and the 5-0 lead.
Cumberlands would score two more runs in the third for the 7-0 lead. Snapp and Simon got walked to start the inning. They both advanced on a wild pitch. With two runners in scoring position, Almanzar notched a two RBI single to left field for the 7-0 lead.
Later in the fourth inning, UC added three more runs to their lead. Arias led off the inning with a double, followed by a Harper walk. Then St Claire stepped to the plate and hit a three-run bomb to left field for the 10-0 lead.
In the fifth, Almanzar led off with a single down the right-field line. Muniz followed with his third double of the day. Arias would get an RBI on a ground out for the 11-0 lead. Perez would also come home to score on an RBI groundout from Harper. Then St Claire notched a single to center field before Snapp got walked. UC scored another run for the 13-0 lead on an RBI double from Simon.
Midway was able to get four runs across in their at-bat to cut the lead to 13-4. UC answers with three runs in the sixth. UC got back-to-back singles from
Caden Petrey and Almanzar; they both would advance on a groundout. Then Arias got walked to load the bases, Harper and St Claire got RBIs from getting walked for the 15-4 lead. After a change of pitchers, Arias scored on a wild pitch to go up 16-4.
In the seventh, UC added two runs to their lead. Petrey led off the inning by getting walked. Two batters later, Arias notched an RBI double to right center. Harper followed with another double to right center for the 18-4 lead.
Midway tallied five runs in the bottom of the seventh before UC added two runs in the top of the eighth to threaten the run rule. Snapp got hit by a pitch to start the inning and would advance to second on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Shavers notched an RBI double down the left-field line for the 19-9 lead. Shavers would advance to third on a groundout, and
Luis Alvarez followed with a walk to put runners on the corners. Shavers came home to score on a wild pitch to make it a 20-9 game. Cumberlands held Midway scoreless in the eighth to get the rule run win.
Cumberlands will be back on the road for this weekend's series against Thomas More in Crestview Hills, KY. The series will start on Friday, April 14
th, at 3 pm with a single game, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon.
