Patriots Archery Captures Seventh Straight USA 3D National Championship

The UC Archery team weathered tough conditions over the past two days and scored 173.5 points to win the 2024 USA Archery 3D Collegiate National Championship, Saturday night.  The Patriots notched seven national titles and had 14 podium finishes as they won 3D nationals for the ninth time in the past ten years.

"It is also an incredible feeling to capture a national title and it takes a complete team effort to accomplish this.  We had tremendous contributions from all divisions as well as from newcomers and veterans a like.  Overall, I'm proud of the way this group weathered the storm on day one and then came out with a vengeance today," said Head Coach Kris Strebeck.

The Patriots tallied five podium finishes, including one national title from the individual qualification.  Freshman Hannah Summers captured Cumberlands lone individual national in the women's fixed pins division.  Summers carded a 410 after utilizing a 208 in the second round to ascend the leaderboard and it was her 16 bonus rings that clinched the title for the freshman.  Ela Smallacombe also earned points for UC after placing sixth with a score of 394.  Anna Jo Rush carded a 389 to finish ninth overall.  

Cumberlands had a trio of top five finishes with a pair of podium finishes in the women's compound division.  Grace Moore earned her second straight 3D podium finish after carding a 422 with 12 bonus rings to finish as the national runner-up.  Claire Garrison hit 19 bonus rings and notched a 420 to collect her first individual podium finish as she earned bronze.  Lanie Nish just missed the podium after utilizing a 214 first round to place fourth with a 420.  Sierra Sands carded a 417 to place sixth at her first collegiate nationals.

UC also notched a trio of top-five finishes in the men's compound division.  Jaden Taylor utilized a strong second round, where he carded a 220 to ascend into second place and finish as the national runner-up with a score of 432. That score is also tied for the fifth best qualifying score in program history. Joseph West and Colton Caudill each opened with a 214 in round one, however, West notched a 210 in the final round to edge out Caudill for fourth place 424 to 422, respectively.

Isaac Ivey captured the Patriots final individual podium finish in the men's barebow division.  Ivey carded a 347 and hit three bonus rings to earn silver, which is his first individual podium finish. That score is also the fourth best qualifying score in program history. Tyler Woosley notched a 323 to finish fourth, while Jonathan Morris carded a 312 to place sixth.  This marks the first time in program history that UC has had three men's barebow archers score.   

UC had a quartet of top-ten finishes in the men's compound division.  Blaine Kostrzewski led the charge tallying a 224 and 222 to finish with a 446 with 24 bonus rings.  Isaac Sullivan recorded a 446, while Tanner Barker notched a 444 to place sixth and seventh, respectively.  Landon Standish shot a 224 in the second round to finish ninth with a 40-target total of 438. 

Brianna Laux earned five points for Cumberlands after tallying a fourth-place finish in the women's recurve division. Laux carded a 194 in the second round to climb one spot after totaling a 381 over the two rounds. 

The Patriots found a slew of success in team rounds scoring points in all 13 divisions.  Overall, UC capturing six national titles and finished with nine podium finishes in team rounds, which was based on archers qualifying scores. 

UC finished atop the podium in all three fixed pins team rounds.  The duo of Jaden Taylor and Hannah Summers earned gold in the mixed team division, while Taylor, Joseph West, and Colton Caudill pulled away from the field and earned a 33-point win in the men's fixed pins team rounds.  The trio of Summers, Ela Smallacombe and Anna Jo Rush earned gold in the women's fixed pins division with a score of 1193.

Grace Moore, Claire Garrison, and Lanie Nish carded a 1262 to finish atop the podium in the women's compound team division.  Blaine Kostrzewski, Isaac Sullivan, and Tanner Barker notched gold in the men's compound team rounds after totaling a 1336. 

In the men's barebow team round it was Isaac Ivey, Tyler Woosley, and Jonathan Morris running away from the field to earn gold for the second straight season.  The trio tallied a 982, which was 135 points ahead of second place.

UC's mixed compound team of Kostrzewski and Moore finished as national runner-up, while women's recurve (Laux, Ceridwyn Salyers, and Lidia Quezada) and women's barebow (Erin Heyob, Kennedy Sumpter, and Mikayla Clemmons) both garnered bronze medals in their respective division.

Men's recurve team and the mixed barebow team placed fifth, while mixed recurve team rounded out the scoring with a sixth-place finish. 

In the final event of the tournament, the mixed equipment team rounds, Kostrzewski, Smallacombe, and Woosley teamed up.  The trio finished fifth after falling in the quarterfinals 122-116 to Rio Grande.

Mid-South Conference rivals Lindsey Wilson tallied 109.5 points to earn second, while Pikeville tallied 101.0 points to finished third. 

Cumberlands will now turn their attention to indoor season, which will begin January 17-19 with the MSC Indoor Championships in Madisonville, KY.
