Patriots Esports Roll into the Playoffs Across Multiple Titles

11/7/2025 9:21:00 AM

Williamsburg, KY – The Cumberlands Esports program continued its strong fall campaign across multiple titles, earning several key wins to close out the regular season and clinching playoff berths in both the NACE and NECC circuits.
League of Legends
UC's NECC League of Legends team continued to dominate, taking a 2-0 win over the University of Florida behind stellar performances from Cody Lawson and Adam Kolton. Lawson paced the Patriots in game one with an 11-2-8 stat line as UC racked up 27 total kills. In game two, Kolton exploded for a 16-2-6 effort, leading the team to 28 kills and another decisive win. The Patriots followed that by defeating North Carolina Asheville to move to 5-1 in NECC play, securing the No. 1 seed heading into next week's playoffs.

In NACE competition, Cumberlands picked up a 2-0 victory over Point Park University on October 28 and swept them again in a playoff rematch on November 4 to advance to the semifinals. They'll face Lesley University on November 11 for a spot in the NACE championship. Adam Kolton was again a key playmaker, combining for 14 kills, 10 deaths, and 8 assists in the team's loss to Virginia Wesleyan earlier in the month.

Rocket League
The Patriots' NECC Rocket League team capped its regular season with a pair of strong showings. UC fell 1-4 to Dayton on October 28 despite six goals from Jonathan Jackson over the five-game series. They bounced back in a big way, defeating Saginaw Valley State 4-2 to hand the Cardinals their only loss of the season. Wyatt Johnson and the Patriots improved to 4-2 overall, earning the No. 4 seed in the NECC playoffs.

In NACE play, the Patriots dropped their October 29 matchup to Texas Tech 1-3, falling just short of qualifying for the postseason.

Super Smash Bros.
UC's Smash Bros. squad has been among the most consistent this semester. After a close 0-2 loss to Transylvania where both matches came down to a single stock, the Patriots rebounded with a 2-1 win over West Georgia behind Ben Skatzes, who took seven total stocks in the series. The Pats fell to UNC Greensboro but closed out their regular season with a 2-0 victory over Georgetown, finishing 4-2 in NECC play to claim the No. 2 seed for next week's playoffs.

In NACE competition, Cumberlands also advanced to the postseason. Despite a 0-2 loss to Mary Washington, UC responded by defeating West Georgia 2-1, coming from behind to take momentum back and win game 3 12-7 in the opening round of playoffs to move on to the semifinals, where they'll face UNC Greensboro on November 13.
