Williamsburg, KY – Stellar performances and playing instrumental roles in their soccer team's success midfielder Carola Fontan and goalie Javiero Izquierdo have been named the Pepsi Athletes of the Week, the athletic department announced Monday.
 
Carola Fontan earned athlete of the week honors after an incredible final site performance helped UC earn a national runner-up finish.  The senior recorded three goals and two assists over the Patriots four matches and scored at least one point in every match.  Fontan opened the tournament connecting with Nicole Araujo for UC's second goal against #4 College of Idaho, before netting the game-winning goal in double overtime as the Patriots advanced.  Against #5 John Brown, Fontan came up with a huge cross, connecting with Araujo in 89' as UC earned the 1-0 win.  In the semifinals, the senior scored the game-winning goal as Cumberlands notched the 1-0 win over Oklahoma Wesleyan to advance to the championship match for the second time in three years.  In the championship match, Fontan netted a goal in the 4' and converted a penalty kick.  For her efforts she was named the NAIA Outstanding Offensive Player of the Tournament.
 
Javiero Izquierdo earned athlete of the week honors after stellar play in goal during UC's men's soccer run to the national quarterfinals.  UC's opened the week against Life as Izquierdo made a save, however, in penalty kicks the senior made a save on the fifth pk helping Cumberlands advance to the quarterfinals.  He followed that up with two saves against Warner Pacific keeping the match scoreless after double-overtime.  Once again the senior came up in the big moment stopping the third pk as the Patriots advance to the national semifinals for the second consecutive year.  Against Grand View, Izquierdo notched a trio of saves as Cumberlands tied their best national finish in program history.
