Bowling Green, Ky – The fifth-seeded Patriots opened the Mid-South Conference tournament with a 4-2 win over fourth-seeded Campbellsville on Thursday to begin the team rounds. Cumberlands also saw action in the individual singles and doubles portion.
The MSC tournament follows a double elimination format with each team needing to win best-of-seven baker style games in each round to advance.
Cumberlands got to an early 1-0 lead, taking the first match by a score of 227-129. After dropping the next match to tie things up 1-1, UC won the next two matches by recording a total pinfall of 179 and 203 to take a commanding 3-1 lead. The Tigers took the next match 192-157 to force a game six. The Patriots bounced back in game six to secure the 4-2 victory by outscoring Campbellsville 256-232 in the final match.
In the singles portion of the tournament, Austin Hale and Liam McNamara finished in the top-12 for the Patriots.
Hale led the way for UC, placing fifth overall with a total pinfall of 696 through three games for a 232-pin average. The junior knocked down 277 pins in game one which was the most by any individual.
McNamara was the next highest finisher in singles for UC, placing 12th overall with a total pinfall of 654 through three games. The graduate student saw his best score come in game one with 225 pins.
Matthew Yazell finished 35th with a total pinfall of 584.
The Pats will be back in action for day two of the MSC Championships on Friday where they will take on #1 Pikeville.
