Patriots Capture 2025 USA Collegiate Outdoor National Championships

The Cumberlands archery team captured a trio of gold medals on the final day of competition as the Patriots captured the 2025 USA Archery Collegiate Outdoor National Championship.  UC garnered 168 points to claim the top spot by 24 points and it marks Cumberlands third outdoor title in the past four years.

"I'm extremely proud of the way our team handling themselves in these extreme conditions throughout the week.  We were able to come together and rely on each other and it was a full team effort," said Head Coach Kris Strebeck. "We had multiple archers post career-best finishes and every one contributed to this team title."

UC tallied 90 points during individual head-to-head and 59 points in team rounds, which was the most by any school.  They capped off the scoring with 19 points in the mixed team rounds. 

On the day, Joseph West and Kennedy Sumpter captured gold in their respective division, while the duo of Hannah Summers and Colton Caudill capped off their incredible season winning gold in the mixed team rounds.

West notched his first individual national title after defeating teammate Jaden Taylor 129-124 in the men's fixed pins gold medal match.  The sophomore opened with a 27 in the first end coupled with a trio of 26's to pull away for the win.  Taylor captured silver as the Patriots swept the men's fixed pins podium for the first time in program history.

Sumpter followed as she was matched up against third-seed Carlie Ellsworth of Muskingum.  The senior took the first end 23-22, before utilizing a strong shot on the second end to extend her lead to 4-0.  Sumpter completed the 6-0 victory to capture her third individual national podium finish.  Sumpter also becomes the first Patriot women's barebow archer to capture an individual national title at Outdoor Nationals.

UC's final gold medal came in the mixed fixed pins division as the Patriots duo defeated Pikeville 142-138 in the finals.  Caudill and Summers outscored the Bears in each of the first three ends to hold a four-point lead going into the final end.  In that end, Cumberlands notched 34 points to secure the gold medal.  It marks the third straight year that the Patriots earned gold in mixed fixed pins.

Anna Jo Rush (women's fixed pins), Lanie Nish (women's compound), Jared Laux (men's compound), and Brianna Laux (women's recurve) all posted national runner-up finishes in their respective division. It was the first individual podium finish for Rush, Nish, and Jared LauxBrianna Laux garnered her four individual podium finish.

Texas A&M finished second with 144 points, while Pikeville garnered third place with 72 points. 

The Patriots close out the season capturing both the 3D and Outdoor National team titles as well as the Mid-South Conference Championships.
