Madeo Wins 10k Title on the Opening Day of the NAIA Outdoor Championships

Marion, IN – UC battled through cold and rainy conditions on the first day of the 2025 NAIA Outdoor T&F National Championships, highlighted by a national champion performance from Luca Madeo in the 10K. Cumberlands sit in second in the team standings with 10 points from the only finals they competed in on the day.
 
Madeo cruised to a first-place finish in the 10000m run to end day one for the Pats. The sophomore clocked a 30:12.05 finish, after leading by almost 150 meters the final four laps of the race. This marks Madeo's second individual national title of the year, as he won the 5K at indoor nationals. Ludovico Vaccari also ran in the 10K, finishing 17th overall with a 31:20.49 finish. 
 
The 4x100 relay broke the school record with a 39.71 finish to earn the top seed in the finals. Donte Sol and Cam Andrews ran the opening two legs before Daniel Dixon and Travion Dotson brought it home for the record-breaking performance. Andrews and Dotson also ran in the open 200m on Wednesday, as Andrews earned the final qualifying spot with a 21.04 finish.
 
UC's duo of Nigel Steenwinkel and Seth Massie sit in the top six after the first five events of the decathlon. Steenwinkel has scored 3599 points for fourth while Massey sits in sixth with 3430 points. Nigel opened the day with a first-place finish in the 100m dash behind a 10.73 finish and also won the 400m dash with a 49.54. Massie earned third in the 100m with a 10.98 while placing sixth in both the long jump and high jump.
 
The Patriots earned a spot in the outdoor 4x800m finals for the first time in 20 years. Coming in as the 32nd seed, the Patriots fought their way to ninth overall in the prelims with a 7:40.81 finish to take the final spot in the championship race tomorrow afternoon. Hauke Trost ran the opening 800m before passing the baton to Maddox Knight. Max Young took over for the third leg prior to the anchor, Ryan Ehrler, closing for the qualifying finish.
 
Cumberlands will return for the second day of competition tomorrow where they are set to compete in seven events, beginning with the decathlon 110m hurdles at 10 AM. For tomorrow's livestream click here.
