Bowling Green, KY – After anchoring the backline and making several critical stops, University of the Cumberlands senior goalkeeper Javiero Izquierdo Cuervo has been named the Mid-South Conference Defensive Player of the Week, announced by the league office Monday.  

Izquierdo played all 180 minutes between the posts this past week, tallying six saves. Izquierdo's play was instrumental in Cumberlands securing a draw against Grace College before defeating #11 Bethel University for their first win of the season. 

In Thursday's matchup against Grace, Izquierdo turned away a pair of key attempts, including a second half stop that kept the Patriots in the contest and helped UC earn the 1-1 draw. 

He followed that up with an even stronger outing on Saturday, registering four saves against nationally ranked Bethel. Izquierdo's efforts led to the Patriots' first clean sheet of the season and a 1-0 win over the Pilots.  

Izquierdo earns the honor for the first time this season and the fourth of his Patriots career. 

The Patriots will return to action this weekend with a pair of matches in Lima, OH opening against Westcliff University at 1:00 on Saturday, August 30, before squaring off against #24 Governors State University at 1:30 on Monday, September 1.
