Patriots Open with 21 Top-Five Finishes, 5 Region Champions To Open the Season

The Cumberlands archery team had an impressive season opener with 17 podium finishes, including five regional champions during the USA 3D Southeast Regionals Friday afternoon at the Laurel County Fairgrounds.  Additionally, the Patriots saw a pair of school records set on the day and have 23 archers qualify for the individual shoot-downs of the MSC 3D Championship.

Isabell Lehsten, Chase White, Joseph West, Blaine Kostrzewski, and Lidia Quezada were the five Patriot archers to collect regional titles.  UC also swept the podium in men's fixed pins, men's compound, and women's recurve division.

Lehsten was dominant in the women's barebow division carding a 362, including seven bonus rings to capture the regional title.  Lehsten broke the school record by 29 points and carded a 182 in the second round.  Teammate Lauren Oosterbaan utilized a strong second round to earn the bronze with a 342, which is the second-best qualifying score in program history.

White captured the Patriots second school record of the day as he pulled away from the field with a 382 to win the men's barebow division.  White utilized a 196 in the second round to break the record of 372 set in 2022.

The Patriots held the top four qualifiers in the men's fixed pins division with West leading the way.  The junior carded a 212 in the first round and came back with a 210 to finish at 422 with 17 bonus rings.  Teammates Bennett Schuler and Caleb Poe tied for second after tallying a 422 with 15 bonus rings.  Schuler won the one-arrow shoot-off to capture second place.  Jackson Ratajczak carded a 415 to place fourth, just missing the podium.

Kostrzewski led a Cumberlands sweep in the men's compound division.  The grad student hit 14 bonus rings and carded a 228 during the second round to finish atop the leaderboard with a 446.   Sophomore Landyn Cox notched a 230 in the second round, which was the top score of the day, to close out as the runner-up with a 444 total.  Newcomer Noah Coyle completed UC's podium sweep tallying a 441 with 24 bonus rings.

Quezada posted a career-best 406 to capture the women's recurve regional title.  She carded a 200 in the first round before coming back with a 206 in the second round. That score was the third-best qualifying score in program history.  Finishing one spot back was Alina Distelberg, who tallied a 402, which ranks fourth in program history.  Ceridwyn Salyers completed the sweep after tallying a 371 with four bonus rings.

UC notched six of the top eight qualifiers in the women's fixed pins division.  Heather Carswell led the Patriots charge with a 401 and eight bonus rings to finished tied for first place.  Carswell closed out the day as the regional runner-up.  Hannah Summers finished just behind her teammate after carding a 400 to capture third place.   Anslee Roberson finished fifth with a 393, while Cammie Shuman (388), Ayla Mills (386), and Anna Jo Rush (383) placed sixth thru eighth, respectively.

Cumberlands had a trio of top-five finishers in the women's compound division.  Sierra Sands carded a 426 with 16 bonus rings to finish in second place, while Lanie Nish was third with a 426 and 14 bonus rings.  Chloe McElroy tallied a 422 to place fifth overall.

In the men's recurve division Brodie Vinson picked up where he left off carding a 388 to finish second.

Cumberlands returns to the range Saturday, September 20th, when they compete in the MSC 3D Championship at the UC All-Purpose Field.  The competition will begin at 8 a.m. with individual shoot-downs followed by team rounds.
