MCKENZIE, TN – The University of the Cumberlands football team returned to the win column Saturday afternoon, defeating Bethel 38-21 in Mid-South Conference action at Walter Butler Stadium. The Patriots improve to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play behind a career-high rushing performance from Jayden Clayton, a record-setting afternoon for quarterback Drew Gregg and a dominant defensive showing from Ritt Tankersley. UC totaled 404 yards of offense, including 238 on the ground, while controlling possession for over 40 minutes.

Ronye Watson added seven receptions for 27 yards and returned a kickoff 73 yards for a touchdown.

Defensively, Tankersley turned in one of the Patriots' strongest individual performances of the season, recording a game-high 12 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, a sack, an interception and a pass breakup. Brandon Burke added five tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery, while Zander Curry finished with four tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and a sack. Bethel struck first, breaking free for a 55-yard touchdown run on its second offensive play to take a 7-0 lead just 39 seconds into the contest.

The Patriots needed only two plays to respond. Gregg opened the possession with a six-yard completion to Petty before Clayton broke through the defense for a 69-yard touchdown run. Khalil Arman's extra point tied the contest at 7-7 with 13:24 remaining in the opening quarter.

Cumberlands' defense quickly settled in on Bethel's next possession. Tankersley recorded a six-yard sack on second down before the Wildcats were forced to punt. Bethel threatened again on its following drive, moving inside the UC five-yard line before Burke forced a fumble at the one and recovered it to prevent the score.

Taking over at their own one-yard line, the Patriots put together a lengthy drive to flip field position. Clayton immediately provided breathing room with a 17-yard run, while Marsh added an 11-yard gain and Gregg connected with Watson for 15 yards. UC marched 67 yards on 13 plays before Arman's 50-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right on the opening play of the second quarter.

Bethel regained the lead on its next possession, using a 27-yard touchdown run to move ahead 14-7 with 13:02 remaining in the half. The Patriots answered right back with another explosive drive, marching 87 yards in six plays. Gregg connected with Petty for an 18-yard gain before Marsh found him for 46 more yards to move UC to the Bethel 23. After a pair of rushing plays, Gregg connected with Skylar Adams for eight yards on third down. Petty capped the possession with an 11-yard touchdown run, and Arman's extra point tied the game at 14-14.

After the defense forced a three-and-out, Cumberlands took advantage of favorable field position to move ahead for the first time. Starting at the Bethel 37, Clayton broke free for a 23-yard gain to move inside the red zone. The drive stalled at the 13, but Arman connected on a 31-yard field goal to give UC a 17-14 advantage with six minutes remaining in the second quarter.

The defense then created another scoring opportunity as Curry recorded a four-yard sack before Tankersley intercepted a third-down pass and returned it 15 yards to the Bethel 26. Cumberlands capitalized on the takeaway with a five-play touchdown drive. Marsh opened the possession with a seven-yard run before Gregg connected with Petty for eight yards. Clayton followed with a 14-yard gain to the two-yard line, and Gregg eventually found Clayton for a three-yard touchdown pass. Arman's extra point extended the Patriots' lead to 24-14 with 1:15 remaining before halftime.

The Patriots wasted no time adding to their advantage after the break. Watson fielded the opening kickoff of the third quarter at the UC 27-yard line and raced 73 yards for a touchdown. Arman converted the extra point to give Cumberlands a 31-14 lead.

UC's defense continued to create problems for the Wildcats throughout the third quarter. Tankersley broke up a third-down pass to force a punt on Bethel's opening possession, while the Patriots later forced another three-and-out to regain possession near midfield.

Starting at their own 44, Cumberlands put together another sustained scoring drive. Clayton gained 11 yards to move into Bethel territory before Gregg connected with Watson for 10 more. The Patriots continued to move the chains, including a four-yard run by Clayton on third-and-one to reach the three-yard line. On the opening play of the fourth quarter, Gregg found Petty for a three-yard touchdown to complete the 10-play, 56-yard drive. Arman's extra point pushed the lead to 38-14 with 14:56 remaining.

The Patriots' defense remained aggressive in the final quarter. Smith recorded a 12-yard sack to force a Bethel punt before Watson returned the kick 33 yards to the Wildcats' 49-yard line.

Hughes helped UC move deeper into Bethel territory with consecutive runs of seven, 12 and 10 yards, but Arman's 32-yard field goal attempt missed wide left. The Wildcats moved into Cumberlands territory on their next possession before Major Newman batted the Wildcats pass to JorDon Perry who made a diving interception catch to end the threat.

Cumberlands continued to control the clock behind Hughes, who helped move the Patriots into Bethel territory before Gregg pinned the Wildcats at their own two-yard line with a 29-yard punt.

Bethel added a touchdown on a 34-yard pass with two minutes remaining to trim the deficit to 38-21, but Cumberlands recovered possession and ran out the remaining clock to secure the conference victory.

The Patriots finished with 24 first downs compared to Bethel's 17 and held a commanding 40:26 to 19:34 advantage in time of possession. UC also protected the football throughout the afternoon, finishing without a turnover after committing four interceptions against Campbellsville the previous week. Defensively, Cumberlands recorded three sacks and three takeaways, while the offense converted four of its five red-zone opportunities into points.

The victory moves Cumberlands to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in Mid-South Conference play, while giving the Patriots their first win in McKenzie since 2017.
