Lansing, MI – The Patriots archery team tallied eight podium finishes, highlighted by a pair of national titles and two archers advancing to the individual gold medal matches, Saturday afternoon at the Hope Sports Complex. UC's men's fixed pins team and men's barebow team finished atop the podium, while
Aiden Woodie and
Lanie Nish will compete for gold on Sunday.
After earning the top-seed, Cumberlands men's fixed pins team of Woodie,
Bennett Schuler, and
Joseph West posted a 3-0 record en route to the gold medal. The trio opened with a 202-194 win over Campbellsville, before defeating Pikeville 204-189 in the semifinals. They saved their best performance for last as UC defeated Texas A&M 211-203 in the finals. It's the second straight year that the Pats have captured gold in men's fixed pins team.
For the second straight year the Patriots have captured gold in the men's barebow team rounds.
Zach Matthews,
Nicolas Mudd, and
Chase White opened with a 6-0 win in the quarterfinals. The trio knocked off second-seed Rio Grande 6-2 in the semifinals before taking down top-seed Texas A&M 6-0 in the gold medal match.
UC also tallied runner-up finishes in both the women's compound team and the women's fixed pins team division. Nish,
Marissa Harding, and
Savannah Hoffman posted a 2-1 mark, including a 215-199 win over Columbia in the semifinals to earn the silver medal. In women's fixed pins, the trio of
Ayla Mills,
Hannah Summers, and
Heather Carswell earned a pair of wins before earning the runner-up finish.
Cumberlands closed out team rounds with the women's recurve team and the men's compound team both tallying fourth place finishes.
Woodie opened the day winning all five of his individual matches to reach the gold medal match in the men's fixed pins division. The freshman cruised into the quarterfinals before knocking off Nate Harper of Pikeville 139-136. He followed that up with a 133-121 win over Robert-Joseph Harris (Wabash) to reach the championship match, where Woodie will face James Brown of Texas A&M. He has already secured his first individual podium finish of his career.
For the second straight year, Nish will be competing in the gold medal match of the women's compound division. The sophomore won consecutive one-arrow shoot-offs after being tied at 142-142 in both the 1/16
th and 1/8
th rounds. Nish followed that up with a 139-134 win over Emalee Wooldrige of Rio Grande in the quarters, before knocking off Sydney Sullenberger of Columbia in the semifinals. She advances to the gold medal match against Rendyn Brooks of Texas A&M.
White caps off a stellar freshman campaign with his third individual podium finish after earning bronze. The MSC Freshman of the Year began the day with three straight 6-0 decisions to reach the semifinals. After falling to the third-place match, White, rallied with a 6-0 win over John Sarazin of Wisconsin LaCrosse to earn the podium finish.
After earning the 15
th-seed in the women's barebow division senior
Mikayla Clemons found a strong rhythm throughout the morning. After opening with a 6-5 win in her first match, Clemons rattled off a 7-1 and 7-3 victory to reach the quarterfinals. The senior then knocked off tenth-seed Jasmine Smith of Texas A&M 6-4 to reach the semifinals. Clemons closed out the day with a fourth-place finish, which marks the highest of her career.
Joseph West (men's fixed pins) and
Lilie Aguilar (women's compound) both tallied a trio of wins to reach the quarterfinals of their respective divisions earning points for the Patriots.
Cumberlands will return to the range Sunday, May 17
th, for the final day of competition of outdoor nationals. The day will begin with the individual gold medal matches, followed by the mixed teams gold medal matches.
