Foley, AL – After jumping out to a big lead after day one of the 2018 USIAC 3D National Championships, the UC Archery team came out and took care of business on day two in team rounds, garnering three more medals including a gold and two bronzes on their way to winning the program's third USIAC 3D National Title.
The Patriots had the one seed in both the men and women's compound team brackets while holding the two seed in both the men and women's bowhunter team brackets. In the women's compound division, UC would send one of its most dominant trios in
Brooke Miller,
Samantha Rayburn, and
Tara Currie out to compete. Securing a first round bye, the trio would defeat Emmanuel in the semifinals 90-78 before defeating the Bulldogs of Union College in the finals by a score of 90-86 to secure the team gold.
In women's bowhunter, the team of
Courtnie Carr,
Gertrude Heavner, and Helen
Michaela McDonald would have the two seed in their tournament, but unfortunately things would not go the way they were hoping. In the opening round, they would be upset by seventh-seeded Lindsey Wilson by a score of 84-77.
The men's compound division team of
Jase Boils,
Josh Isenhoff, and
Clint Moore would have success on the day. The top-seeded trio would take down eighth-seed Lindsey Wilson 92-70 before falling to Mississippi College in the semifinals 91-90. In the bronze medal match, the Patriots would come away with a 94-91 win over Southeast Illinois College.
Finally, in the men's bowhunter division, the team of
Caleb Dixon,
Aaron Adams, and
Jeremiah Jones found themselves also making on the podium. The second-seeded Patriots defeated Bethel in the opening round 87-85 before being upended by Hocking College in the semifinals 94-78. In the bronze medal match, it was UC knocking off top-seeded Union College 94-87 to earn the medal.
Cumberlands finished the two-day tournament with 18 points in individual finishes, eight points in mixed-team finishes, and six final points on day two in team finishes for a grand total of 32 points. The Patriots nearly doubled over eventual second-place team Union College with 17 total points. Emmanuel College (15), University of Pikeville (14), and Kentucky Christian University (9) rounded out the top five.
UC Head Coach
Kris Strebeck commented, "Words can't express how proud I am of this team. They really came out this weekend and left everything on the range. This was a great way to end the fall season. All the hard work that they have put in showed itself this weekend."
Cumberlands now has some time off before they begin prep for the indoor season.
